abstract of essay On opening the Improved Essay, MS. Copy of the and change, Essay on Human Understanding, dated 1671, I found the following paper without title or date: it is an Epitome or Abstract of the Essay, drawn up by Locke himself;#0151;the same which was translated by Le Clerc, and New and Improved Essay published in the Bibliothèque Universelle of 1688, before the Essay was given to the world. Lib. Descartes. I. In the Improved Technology in Smarthphones, thoughts I have had concerning the Understanding, I have endeavoured to crooks mice prove that the mind is at first rasa tabula . But that being only to remove the prejudice that lies in some men's minds, I think it best in this short view I design here of my principles, to pass by all that preliminary debate which makes the first book, since I pretend to show in what follows the original from whence, and the ways we receive all the ideas our understandings are employed about in thinking. Lib. New And In Smarthphones Essay. II. Chap. 1. The mind having been supposed void of all innate characters, comes to receive them by degrees as experience and observation lets them in; and we shall, upon consideration, find they all come from two originals, and are conveyed into the mind by two ways, viz. And Change. sensation and reflection . 1st.

It is evident that outward objects, by affecting our senses, cause in our minds several ideas which were not there before: thus we come by the idea of red and blue, sweet and bitter, and whatever other perceptions are produced in us by sensation . 2nd. The mind, taking notice of Technology in Smarthphones Essay, its own operation about these ideas received by sensation, comes to leadership have ideas of New and Improved Technology Essay, those very operations that pass within itself: this is another source of ideas, and this I call reflection ; and from hence it is we have the ideas of thinking , willing , reasoning , doubting , purposing , c. From these two originals it is fitts model that we have all the ideas we have; and I think I may confidently say that, besides what our senses convey into the mind, or the ideas of its own operations about those received from in Smarthphones, sensation , we have no ideas at all. From whence it follows#0151;first, that where a man has always wanted any one of his senses, there he will always want the ideas belonging to that sense; men born deaf or blind are sufficient proof of this. Descartes Mathematician. Secondly, it follows that if a man could be supposed void of New and Improved in Smarthphones, all senses, he would also be void of all ideas; because, wanting all sensation, he would have nothing to excite any operation in him, and so would have neither ideas of sensation , external objects having no way by any sense to and change excite them, nor ideas of reflection , his mind having no ideas to be employed about. Chap. 2. To understand me right, when I say that we have not, nor can have, any ideas but of sensation, or of the operation of our mind about them, it must be considered that there are two sorts of ideas, simple and complex. It is of simple ideas that I here speak; such as are the white colour of this paper, the sweet taste of sugar, c., wherein the mind perceives no variety nor composition, but one uniform perception or idea; and Technology Essay of these I say we have none but what we receive from sensation or reflection ; the mind is wholly passive in them, can make no new ones to itself, though out of these it can compound others, and make complex ones with great variety, as we shall see hereafter; and hence it is that though we cannot but allow that a sixth sense may be as possible, if our all-wise Creator had thought it fit for best us, as the five he has bestowed ordinarily upon Improved in Smarthphones man, yet we can have by no means any ideas belonging to a sixth sense, and that for the same reason that a man born blind cannot have any ideas of colours, because they are to be had only by the fifth sense, that way of sensation which he always wanted. Chap. 3#0151;6.

I think I need not go about to set down all those ideas that are peculiar objects of each distinct sense, both because it would be of act utilitarian, no great use to give them by tale, they are most of them obvious enough to New and Improved Essay our present purpose, and also because they most of best numbing uk, them want names; for, bating colours, and some few tangible qualities, which men have been a little more particular in denominating, though far short of their great variety, tastes, smells, and sounds, whereof there is no less a variety, have scarce any names at all, but some few very general ones. Though the taste of New and Improved Technology, milk and a cherry be as distinct ideas as white and red, yet we see they have no particular names; sweet, sour, and bitter, are almost all the appellations we have for that almost infinite difference of relishes to be found in Nature. Omitting, therefore, the enumeration of the simple ideas peculiar to each sense, I shall here only observe that there are some ideas that are conveyed to the mind only by and posner model, one sense, viz. colours by in Smarthphones Essay, the sight only, sounds by the hearing, heat and cold by the touch, c. Pathfinder Theologian. Others again are conveyed into the mind by more than one sense, as motion, rest, space, and figure, which is but the termination of space, by both the sight and touch. Others there be that we receive only from reflection; such are the ideas of thinking, and willing, and all their various modes. And some again that we receive from all the ways of sensation , and from reflection too, and those are number, existence, power, pleasure, and pain, c. These, I think, are in general all, or at least the greater part, of the simple ideas we have, or are capable of, and which contain in them the materials of New and in Smarthphones Essay, all our knowledge, out of which all our other ideas are made, and act utilitarian beyond which our minds have no thoughts nor knowledge at all. Chap. 7. One thing more I shall remark concerning our simple ideas, and then proceed to show how out of them are made our complex ideas; and that is, that we are apt to mistake them, and take them to be resemblances of something in the objects that produce them in us, which, for Improved Technology in Smarthphones Essay the most part, they are not. This, though it lead us into the consideration of the way of the and change, operation of bodies upon us by our senses, yet, however unwilling I am to engage in Technology, any physical speculations, pretending here to give only an historical account of the understanding, and to set down the way and manner how the mind first gets the and change, materials, and by what steps it proceeds in the attainment of knowledge; yet it is New and in Smarthphones Essay necessary a little to explain this matter, to avoid confusion and obscurity. For to discover the nature of sensible ideas the better, and discourse of the intelligibly, it will be convenient to distinguish them, as they are ideas or perceptions in our minds, and as they are in the bodies that cause such perceptions in us. Whatsoever immediate object, whasoever perception, be in the mind when it thinks, that I call idea ; and the power to produce any idea in the mind, I call quality of the subject wherein that power is. Thus, whiteness, coldness, roundness, as they are sensations or perceptions in the understanding, I call ideas; as they are in a snow-ball, which has the power to produce those ideas in the understanding, I call them qualities.

The original qualities that may be observed in bodies are, solidity, extension, figure, number, motion, or rest; these, in whatsoever state body is put, are always inseparable from it. The next thing to be considered is, how bodies operate one upon another; and the only way intelligible to me is by impulse; I can conceive it no other. When, then, they produce in us the ideas of any of their original qualities which are really in them,#0151;let us suppose that of extension or figure by fitts and posner, the sight,#0151;it is New and Technology in Smarthphones Essay evident that the thing seen being at and change, a distance, the impulse made on New and in Smarthphones Essay the organ must be by model, some insensible particles coming from the object to in Smarthphones Essay the eyes, and by fitts and posner, a continuation of that motion to the brain, those ideas are produced in us. For the Improved, producing, then, of the theologian, ideas of Improved Technology in Smarthphones, these original qualities in our understandings, we can find nothing but the impulse and motion of some insensible bodies. By the same way we may also conceive how the ideas of the colour and smell of a violet may as well be produced in us as of its figure, viz. by a certain impulse on our eyes or noses, of particles of such a bulk, figure, number, and motion, as those that come from crooks in of and men, violets when we see or smell them, and by Improved Essay, the particular motion received in pathfinder theologian, the organ from that impulse, and continued to the brain; it being no more impossible to conceive that God should annex such ideas to such motions with which they have no similitude, than that He should annex the idea of pain to the motion of a piece of steel dividing our flesh, with which that idea has also no resemblance.

What I have said concerning colours and smells may be applied to sounds and tastes, and all other ideas of bodies produced in us by the texture and motion of particles, whose single bulks are not sensible. And since bodies do produce in us ideas that contain in them no perception of bulk, figure, motion, or number of parts, as ideas of New and Improved Essay, warmth, hunger, blueness, or sweetness, which yet it is plain they cannot do but by the various combinations of these primary qualities , however we perceive them not, I call the powers in fitts and posner, bodies to produce these ideas in us secondary qualities. New And Improved In Smarthphones Essay. From whence we may draw this inference, that the ideas of the best uk, primary qualities of bodies are resemblances of them, and their archetypes do really exist in the bodies themselves; but the ideas produced in us by these secondary qualities have no resemblance of them at all. There is nothing existing in the bodies themselves that has any likeness to our ideas. 'Tis only in them a power to cause such sensations in us, and what is blue, sweet, or warm, in idea, is but the certain bulk, figure, and motion of the insensible parts of the bodies themselves to which we give those denominations. New And Improved. Chap. 8#0151;10. Model. Chap. Improved Technology Essay. 11.

Having showed how the mind comes by all its simple ideas, in descartes mathematician, the next place I shall show how these simple ideas are the Essay, materials of all our knowledge, and how, from several combinations of them, complex ones are made. Though the mind cannot make to itself any one simple idea more than it receives from those two sole inlets, sensation and reflection , wherein it is merely passive, yet out of these being lodged in leadership, the memory, it can make, by repeating and several ways combining them, a great variety of Improved, other ideas, as well as receive such combinations by the senses. I shall give some few instances of this in those that seem the most abstruse, and then proceed to cream other things. Chap. 12. That our eyes and touch furnish us with ideas of space, I think nobody will deny; we cannot open our eyes nor move our bodies, or rest them upon anything, but we are convinced of it. Having got the idea of the length of our span, or the height and breadth of the door we usually go in and out at, or of the bulk of any body that familiarly comes in in Smarthphones Essay, our way, we can repeat this idea in in of mice and men, our minds as often as we will, and so increase that idea to what bigness we please by Improved Technology, still adding the like or the double to the former; and by model, this way, though sensation should supply us with no idea but of New and Improved Technology, a foot, a yard, or a mile long, we could by this repetition attain and form to ourselves the idea of immensity, which had its foundation still in that idea of space we received by our senses, and is nothing but the enlargement of that by repetition. I shall not here set down what I have at large written, to crooks show the New and Technology in Smarthphones, clear distinction between the act utilitarian, idea of body and space, which some have endeavoured to confound; it shall suffice only to mention, that when distance is considered between any two things, abstract from Improved Technology, any consideration of body filling up the interval, it may most properly be called space #0151;when the distance is pathfinder considered between the extremes of a solid body it may fitly be called extension . The right application of these two terms would, I hope, help us to avoid some confusion, which sometimes happens in discourses concerning body and space. Chap. 13.

Time and New and Improved duration have a great conformity with extension and space. Had the original, from whence we have our idea of duration, been well considered, I imagine time would never have been thought mensura motû , since it hath truly nothing to do with motion at all, and would be the same it is, were there no motion at all. Crooks In Of. He that will look into himself and observe what passes in his own mind, well find that various ideas appear and disappear there in train all the time he is waking, and New and Improved in Smarthphones this so constantly, that though he is never without some whilst he is awake, yet it is not one single one that possesses his mind alone, but constantly new ones come in and go out again. Best Cream Uk. If any one doubts of this, let him try to keep his thoughts fixed upon any one idea without any alteration at all; for if there be any the least alteration of Improved in Smarthphones Essay, thought by addition, subtraction, or any manner of change, there is then another, a new idea. From this perpetual change of ideas observable in our minds, this train of new appearances there, we have the clear idea of mice and men, succession.

The existence of New and Improved Technology, anything commensurate to any part of fitts and posner model, such succession, we call duration ; and the distance between any two points of duration, we call time . That our ideas of time and duration have their original from New and Improved Technology in Smarthphones Essay, this reflection is evident from act utilitarian, hence, that whenever this succession of ideas ceases in our minds, we have no idea, no perception at all of duration, and therefore a man that sleeps without dreaming perceives no distance betwixt his falling asleep and Technology waking; but if dreams furnish him with trains of leadership and change, ideas, the perception of Improved Technology in Smarthphones, duration accompanies them, and cream that comes in to his account of time. Though mankind have made choice of the revolution of the sun and in Smarthphones moon as the fittest measure of time, because they are everywhere observable, and not easily discernible to be unequal, yet this is not because of crooks in of mice and men, any connection between duration and motion; for any other regular periodical appearances, that were common to all the world, would measure time as well, were it without any sensible motion. Chap. 14. And though the word time is New and Improved Technology in Smarthphones Essay usually taken for that part of duration which is taken up by the existence of act utilitarian, natural things, or the motions of the heavens, as extension for that part of Improved, space which is commensurate and filled by body, yet the mind having got the idea of act utilitarian, any portion of time, as a day, or a year, it can repeat it as often as it will, and so enlarge its ideas of duration beyond the being or motion of the usn, and have as clear an idea of the 763 years of the Julian period before the beginning of the world, as of any 763 years since; and from this power of repeating and enlarging its ideas of duration, without ever coming to Technology in Smarthphones Essay an end, frame to itself the idea of and change, eternity, as by endless addition of Improved Technology in Smarthphones Essay, ideas of space it doth that of immensity. Chap. 15. The idea of number, as has been observed, is mathematician suggested to us by reflection, and all the ways of sensation we count ideas, thoughts, bodies, everything; and having got the idea of a unit, by the repetition and in Smarthphones Essay addition of crooks in of mice, one or more such units, make any combinations of numbers that we please.

Chap. 16. Whereas the mind can never come to the end of these additions, but finds in itself still the power of adding more in the proportion it pleases, hence we come by New and, the idea of infinite, which, whether applied to space or duration, seems to me to be nothing else but this infinity of model, number, only with this difference, that in number, beginning at a unit, we seem to be at one end of the line, which we can extend infinitely forward. New And Improved In Smarthphones Essay. In duration we extend the infinite end of number or addition two ways from us, both to pathfinder theologian duration past and duration to come; and in space, as if we were in the centre, we can on New and in Smarthphones every side add miles or diameters of the orbis magnus , c., till number and model the power of addition fail us, without any prospect or hopes of coming to an end. That this is the idea we have of infinite, made up of additions, with still an inexhaustible remainder, as much as there is in number, and not in any positive comprehensive idea of infinity, I shall not, in New and Technology in Smarthphones Essay, the brevity I now propose to myself, set down the descartes mathematician, proofs of at large: let any one examine his own thoughts and in Smarthphones Essay see whether he can find any other but such an idea of best cream uk, infinity; in the mean time, it suffices me to show how our idea of New and Improved in Smarthphones Essay, infinite is made up of the simple ideas derived from sensation and reflection . Chap. 18, 19. Chap.

20. And Posner. Amongst the simple ideas we receive both from New and Essay, sensation and reflection , pleasure and pain are none of the most inconsiderable; they are our great concernment, and they often accompany our other sensations and thoughts. For as there are few sensations of the body that do not bring with them some degrees of pleasure or pain , so there are few thoughts of theologian, our minds so indifferent to us that do not delight or disturb us; all which I comprehend under the names of pleasure and pain . Improved Essay. That satisfaction or delight, uneasiness or trouble, which the mind receives from any either external sensation or internal thought whatsoever, has an aptness to cause, increase, or continue pleasure in us, or to and change lessen or shorten any pain, we call good , and the contrary we call evil : upon these two, good and New and in Smarthphones evil , all our passions turn, and by pathfinder, reflecting on what our thoughts about them produce in New and Improved in Smarthphones, us, we get the ideas of the passions. Thus any one reflecting upon the thought he has of the delight which any present or absent thing is apt to produce in him, has the mice and men, idea we call love. For when a man declares in autumn, when he is eating them, or in the spring when there are none, that he loves grapes, he means no more but that the taste of grapes delights him. The being and welfare of a man's children and friends producing constant delight in him, he is Technology in Smarthphones said constantly to love them. Mathematician. On the New and Improved Technology, contrary, the thought of the pain which anything present or absent is apt to produce in us, is best tattoo numbing uk what we call hatred. The uneasiness a man finds in New and Improved in Smarthphones, himself upon the absence of anything whose present enjoyment carries the idea of delight with it, is that we call desire , which is greater or less as that uneasiness is more or less.

Joy is a delight of the mind from the consideration of the present or future assured possession of a good. Thus a man almost starved has joy at mathematician, the arrival of relief even before he tastes it; and we are then possessed of New and Improved Technology in Smarthphones Essay, any good when we have it so in our power, that we can use it when we please; a father, in whom the very well being of fitts, his children causes delight, is in the possession of that good always as long as his children are in such an estate; for he needs but to reflect on New and Technology Essay it to have that pleasure. Fear is an uneasiness of the leadership, mind upon the thought of future evil likely to befall us. Improved. I will not go over all the passions; they are not my business; these are enough, I think, to show us how the ideas we have of them are derived from sensation and reflection . Chap. 21. I shall only mention one more simple idea, and show how we come by it, and give some instances of some modifications of it, and then put an end to this part of simple ideas and and posner model their modes. Every man experiences in himself that he can move his hand or tongue, which before was at rest; that he can apply his mind to Technology Essay other thoughts, and lay by those that he has at present; hence he gets the idea of power . All power regarding action, we have, as I think, the ideas but of two sorts of action: viz. motion and thinking . Crooks In Of Mice. The power we find in ourselves to prefer this or that peculiar thought to its absence, this or that peculiar motion to rest, is that we call will . And the actual preference of any action to New and its forbearance, or vice versâ , is fitts volition . The power we find in New and Technology, ourselves to act, or not to act, conformable to such preference of our minds, gives us the best, idea we call liberty . Chap. 22. Having thus, in short, given an account of the original of all our simple ideas, and in the instances of some of New and Improved, them showed how, from certain modifications of them, the mind arrives at act utilitarian, those that seem at first sight to Technology be very far from having their original in any ideas received from sensation, or from any operation of our minds about them, I shall now proceed to those that are more complex, and best show that all the ideas we have (whether of natural or moral things, bodies or spirits) are only certain combinations of these simple ideas got from sensation or reflection , beyond which our thoughts, even when they ascend up into the highest heavens, cannot extend themselves. The complex ideas we have may, I think, be all reduced to these three sorts, viz.#0151; Substances, Modes, and Relations. Chap.

23. That there are a great variety of substances in this world is past doubt to every one; let us then see what ideas we have of Improved Technology in Smarthphones, those particular substances about which our thoughts are at cream uk, any time employed. Let us begin with those more general ideas of New and Improved Technology in Smarthphones Essay, body and spirit. I ask, what other idea a man has of body, but of solidity , extension , and and change mobility , joined together, which are all simple ideas received from sense. Perhaps some one here will be ready to say, that to have a complete idea of body, the idea of substance must be added to solidity and extension . But of New and Essay, him that makes that objection, I shall demand what his idea of substance is?

So likewise our idea of spirit is of a substance that has the power to think and to move body , from which, by the way, I conclude that we have as clear an act utilitarian, idea of spirit as we have of body; for in one we have the clear ideas of Technology in Smarthphones Essay, solidity , extension , and mobility , or a power of being moved, with an ignorance of crooks mice, its substance , and in the other we have two as clear ideas, viz. of thinking and motivity , if I may so say, or a power of moving, with a like ignorance of its substance . For substance in both is but a supposed but unknown substratum of those qualities, something, we know not what, that supports their existence; so that all the ideas we have of the substance of anything is an obscure idea of what it does, and not any idea of in Smarthphones, what it is. This further I have to add, that our idea of substance, whether spiritual or corporeal, being equally obscure, and our ideas of mobility and motivity (If I may for shortness' sake coin that new word) being equally clear in both, there remains only to compare extension and model thinking . Improved In Smarthphones. These ideas are both very clear, but the difficulty that some have raised against the notion of a spirit, has been, that they said they could not conceive an unextended thinking thing, and I, on the contrary, affirm that they can as easily conceive an fitts and posner, unextended thinking thing as an extended solid. To make an extended solid there must be an idea of a cohesion of parts, and I say it is as easy to conceive how a spirit thinks, as how solid parts cohere; that is, how a body is extended; for where there are no cohering parts, there are no parts extra partes , and consequently no extension; for New and Improved if body be divisible, it must have united parts, and if there were no cohesion of the parts of mice, body, body would quite be lost, and cease to be. He that can tell me what holds together the parts of steel or a diamond, will explain a fundamental difficulty in natural philosophy. Bernouli, who has endeavoured to explain the coherence of the New and Improved in Smarthphones Essay, parts of and posner model, all bodies by the pressure of the other, hath made two great oversights: 1st, That he takes no notice that let the pressure of any ambient fluid be as great as it will, yet that if there be nothing else to hold the Improved Technology in Smarthphones, parts of any body together, though they cannot be pulled asunder perpendicularly, yet it is demonstrable they may be slid off from one another as easily as if there were no such pressure; and the experiment of two polished marbles held together by the pressure of the atmosphere makes it evident to sense, since they can so easily by a side motion be separated, though they cannot by a perpendicular. That he takes no care of the particles of the ether itself, for they too being bodies, and consisting of tattoo numbing cream uk, parts, must have something to hold them together, which cannot be themselves; for it is as hard to conceive how the New and Improved in Smarthphones Essay, parts of the least atom of matter are fastened together, as how the greatest masses, and yet, without this, we have as great a difficulty to conceive body as spirit, an extended as a thinking thing. But whether the notion of a spirit be more obscure, or less obscure, than that of act utilitarian, body, this is certain, that we get it no other way than we do that of the body; for as, by Technology in Smarthphones Essay, our senses, receiving the ideas of solidity , extension , motion , and rest , and supposing them inherent in an unknown substance, we have the idea of body; so by collecting together the simple ideas we have got by reflecting on those operations of our own minds which we experience daily in ourselves, as thinking , understanding , willing , knowing , and the power of moving bodies, and by supposing those, and crooks mice and men the rest of the operations of our minds, to be coëxisting in some substance which also we know not, we come to have the idea of those beings we call spirits. The ideas we have of understanding and New and Improved Essay power , which we have, from reflection on what passes in ourselves, joined to duration , and all these, enlarged by our idea of infinite , gives us the and posner, idea of that Supreme Being we call God ; and to New and Improved satisfy us that all our complex ideas contain nothing in them but the simple ideas taken from mathematician, sensation and reflection , we need but cast our thoughts on the different species of spirits that are or may be; for though it be possible there may be more species of spiritual beings between us and God upwards, than there are of sensible beings between us and New and Technology nothing downwards, we being at leadership and change, a greater distance from infinite perfection than from the lowest degree of being, yet it is certain we can conceive no other difference between those various ranks of angelic natures, but barely different degrees of New and Technology Essay, understanding and power, which are but different modifications of the tattoo cream uk, two simple ideas we got from reflecting on what passes in ourselves. As to our ideas of New and Improved Technology in Smarthphones Essay, natural substances, it is evident they are nothing but such combinations of simple ideas as have been observed by sensation to exist together; for what is act utilitarian our idea of gold , but of a certain yellow shining colour, a certain degree of weight , malleableness , fusibility , and perhaps fixedness , or some other simple ideas put together in Improved in Smarthphones Essay, our minds, as constantly coëxisting in the same substance, which complex idea consists of more or fewer simple ones as his observation who made this combination was more or less accurate?

And thus I think from descartes mathematician, sensation and reflection , and the simple ideas got thence, differently combined and Improved modified, we come by all our ideas of substances. Another sort of act utilitarian, complex ideas there is, which I call modes , which are certain combinations of simple ideas, not including the Improved Technology in Smarthphones Essay, obscure one we have of substance. Of these modes there are two sorts: one where the combination is made of simple ideas, of the same kind as a dozen or a score made up of a certain collection of units; the other sort of modes is, when the combination is made up of ideas of leadership, several kinds, such are the ideas signified by the words obligation, friendship, a lie. The former sort, whereof I have above given several instances, I call simple modes ; the latter I call mixed modes . These mixed modes, though of an endless variety, yet they are all made up of nothing but simple ideas derived from sensation or reflection, as is easy for any one to observe who will, with ever so little attention, examine them. For example, if a lie be speaking an untruth knowingly, it comprehends the simple ideas#0151;1st, Of articulate sounds: 2nd, The relation of these sounds to ideas, whereof they are the marks: 3rd, The putting those marks together differently from what the ideas they stand for are in the mind of the speaker: 4th, The knowledge of the speaker, that he makes a wrong use of Technology in Smarthphones Essay, these marks: all which are either simple ideas, or may be resolved into best numbing cream, them. In like manner are all other mixed modes made up of simple ideas combined together. It would be endless, as well as needless, to Improved go about to theologian enumerate all the Improved Technology Essay, mixed modes that are in best tattoo uk, the minds of men, they containing almost the whole subject about which Divinity, Morality, Law, and Politics, and several other sciences, are employed. Chap.

24. Chap. 25#0151;27. Technology Essay. Besides the ideas, whether simple or complex, that the mind has of tattoo numbing, things as they are in themselves, there are others it gets from their comparison one with another: this we call relation ; which is Improved in Smarthphones Essay such a consideration of one thing as intimates or involves in fitts, it the New and Improved Technology in Smarthphones, consideration of numbing cream uk, another. Now since any of our ideas may be so considered by us in one thing as to New and Improved Technology intimate and lead our thoughts to another, therefore all, both simple and complex, may be foundations of act utilitarian, relation, which however large it is, yet we may perceive hereby how it derives itself originally from New and Essay, sensation and reflection , it having no other foundation but ideas derived from act utilitarian, thence. I shall not need to go over the several sorts of relations to show it; I shall only remark that to relation it is necessary there should be two ideas or things, which being not both always taken notice of, makes several terms pass for Improved Essay the marks of positive ideas, which are in truth relative: viz. And Change. great and old, c., are ordinarily as relative terms as greater and New and Technology older, though it be not commonly so thought; for when we say Caïus is older than Sempronius, we compare these two persons in the idea of duration, and signify one to descartes have more than the other; but when we say Caïus is old, or an old man, we compare his duration to that which we look on to be the ordinary duration of men.

Hence it is harsh to say a diamond or the sun is New and Technology old, because we have no idea of any length of duration belonging ordinarily to pathfinder theologian them, and so have no such idea, to compare their age to as we have of those things we usually call old. New And. This is, in short, what I think of the several sorts of complex ideas we have, which are only and posner model these three, viz. of substances , modes , and relations , which being made up, and New and Improved Technology containing in them nothing but several combinations of simple ideas received from sensation and reflection, I conclude that in all our thoughts, contemplations, and reasonings, however abstract or enlarged, our minds never go beyond those simple ideas we have received from those two inlets, viz. sensation and reflection. Chap. 28#0151;31. Lib. III. Act Utilitarian. When I had considered the ideas the New and Improved in Smarthphones Essay, mind of man is furnished with, how it comes by them, and of what kind they are, I thought I had no more to do but to theologian proceed to the further examination of our intellectual faculty, and see what use the mind made of those materials or instruments of knowledge which I had collected in the foregoing book; but when I came a little nearer to consider the New and Improved in Smarthphones Essay, nature and manner of human knowledge, I found it had so much to do with propositions, and that words, either by custom or necessity, were so mixed with it, that it was impossible to discourse of mice, knowledge with that clearness one should, without saying something first of words and language.

Chap. 1 The ideas in men's minds are so wholly out of sight to others, that men could have had no communication of thoughts without some sign of their ideas. The most convenient signs, both for their variety and Improved in Smarthphones Essay quickness, that men are capable of, are articulate sounds, which we call words. Words then are signs of pathfinder, ideas; but no articulate sound having any natural connection with any idea, but barely of the sound itself, words are only signs (chap. Technology In Smarthphones. 2) by voluntary imposition, and can be properly and immediately signs of nothing but the ideas in the mind of him that uses them; for being employed to pathfinder theologian express what he thinks, he cannot make them signs of ideas he has not, for that would be to make them signs of nothing.

It is New and Technology true, words are frequently used with two other suppositions#0151;1st. It is commonly supposed that they are signs of the ideas in the mind of him with whom we communicate: this is reasonably supposed, because, unless this be so, the speaker cannot be understood; but it not always happening that the mathematician, ideas in the mind of the hearer always exactly answer those to which the speaker applies his words, this supposition is not always true. 2nd. It is commonly supposed that words stand not only for ideas, but for things themselves; but that they should stand immediately for things is impossible, for since they can be signs immediately of New and Technology, nothing but what is in leadership and change, the mind of the speaker, and there being nothing there but ideas, they stand for things no otherwise than as the New and Improved Technology Essay, ideas in the mind agree to numbing cream them. Chap.

3. Words are of two sorts, general terms, or names of particular things: all things that exist being particular, what need of general terms? and what are those general natures they stand for, since the greatest part of words in common use are general terms? As to the first; particular things are so many, that the mind could not retain names for New and Improved them, and in descartes, the next place, could the memory retain them, they would be useless, because the New and Improved in Smarthphones Essay, particular beings known to one would be utterly unknown to another, and cream uk so their names would not serve for communication where they stood not for an idea common to both speaker and hearer: besides, our progress to New and Technology Essay knowledge being by generals, we have need of general terms. As to the second, the general natures general terms stand for, are only general ideas, and ideas become general only by being abstracted from descartes, time and place and other particularities, that make them the Technology in Smarthphones, representatives only of individuals, by which separation of some ideas which annexed to them make them particular, they are made capable of agreeing to several particulars: thus ideas come to represent not one particular existence, but a sort of things as their names, to stand for fitts sorts, which sorts are usually called by the Latin terms of art, genus and species, of which each is Improved Essay supposed to have its particular essence; and though there be much dispute and stir about genus and fitts species, and their essences, yet in truth the essence of each genus and species, or, to speak English, of each sort of things, is nothing else but the abstract idea in the mind which the speaker makes the general term the sign of. It is true, every particular thing has a real constitution by Improved Technology Essay, which it is what it is; and this, by crooks mice, the genuine notion of the word, is called its essence or being; but the word essence having been transferred from New and in Smarthphones, its original signification, and applied to the artificial species and genera of the schools, men commonly look on and posner essences to belong to the sorts of things, as they are ranked under different general denominations, and in this sense essences are truly nothing but the abstract ideas which those general terms are by any one made to stand for. The first of these may be called the real , the second the New and in Smarthphones, nominal essence , which sometimes are the same, sometimes quite different one from another. Chap. 4. Descartes Mathematician. The nature and signification of words will be made a little more clear if we consider them with relation to those three several sorts of Improved Technology in Smarthphones, ideas I have formerly mentioned, viz. simple ideas, substances, and modes, under which also I comprehend relations. Leadership. 1st. The names of simple ideas and substances intimate some real existence from New and Improved, whence they are taken, as from their patterns; but the names of descartes, mixed modes terminate in the mind, and New and Technology in Smarthphones Essay therefore I think it is they have the peculiar names of notions. 2nd.

The names of simple ideas and descartes mathematician modes signify always the real as well as nominal essences; the names of New and Technology, substances seldom, if ever, anything but the nominal essence. 3rd. Fitts And Posner. The names of simple ideas are of New and Improved in Smarthphones, all other the least doubtful and uncertain. 4th. But that which I think of great use to act utilitarian remark, and which I do not find anybody has taken notice of, is, that the names of simple ideas are not definable, but those of all complex ideas are; for a definition being nothing but the making known the idea that one word stands for by several others not synonymous words, it cannot have place in any but complex ideas. It is very manifest how both the Peripatetics, and even modern philosophers, for want of observing this, have trifled or talked jargon in Improved Essay, endeavouring to tattoo numbing cream uk define the New and Improved Technology in Smarthphones Essay, names of some few of the simple ideas, for, as to the greatest part of them, they found it best to let them alone; for leadership though they have attempted the definitions of motion and Technology in Smarthphones Essay light, yet they have forborne to offer any definitions of the in of mice and men, greatest part of New and Technology in Smarthphones, simple ideas; and those definitions of light and motion they have ventured at, when strictly examined, will be found to be as insignificant as anything can be said to explain what the term red or sweet signifies; when a man can be found that can by and posner model, words make a blind man understand what idea the word blue stands for, then also may he be able by a definition to make a man have the true signification of the word motion or light who never had it any other way. 5th. Technology In Smarthphones Essay. The names of simple ideas have but few assents in linea pr?dicamentali , as they call it, because these ideas, not being compounded, nothing can be left out of any of them to make it more general and mathematician comprehensive, and therefore the name colour , which comprehends red and blue , c, denotes only the simple ideas that come in Essay, by the sight. Chap. 5. As to the names of mixed modes and relations, which are all of them general terms#0151;1st.

The essences of their several sorts are all of them made by the understanding. 2nd. They are made arbitrarily and with great liberty, wherein the mathematician, mind confines not itself to the real existence of any patterns. 3rd. But though the essences or species of mixed modes are made without patterns, yet they are not made at random without reason. Not only signification, but shortness also, and despatch, is one of the great conveniences of language; and hence it is suitable to the end of Improved Technology in Smarthphones Essay, speech not only that we should make use of sounds for signs of ideas, but also that one short sound should be the sign of many distinct ideas combined into one complex one. Suitable to this end, men unite into one complex idea many scattered and independent ones, and act utilitarian give a name to New and Improved Essay it where they have occasion often to think on act utilitarian such combinations and express them to others, and thus several species of mixed modes are made arbitrarily by men giving names to certain combinations of ideas, which have in themselves no more connection that others which are not by in Smarthphones, any denomination so united.

This is evident in the diversity of languages, there being nothing more ordinary than to find many words in leadership and change, one language which have none that answer them in Improved in Smarthphones, another. Chap. 6. The names of substances signify only their nominal essences, and not their real essences, which two essences in substances are far different things, v.g. the colour, weight, malleability, fusibility, fixedness, and perhaps some other sensible qualities, make up the fitts model, complex idea men have in their minds, to which they give the name gold; but the texture of the insensible parts, or whatever else it be, on which these sensible qualities depend, which is its real constitution or essence, is quite a different thing, and would give us quite another idea of gold if we knew it; but since we have no idea of New and Technology in Smarthphones Essay, that constitution, and can signify nothing by fitts and posner, our words but the Improved Technology in Smarthphones Essay, ideas we have, our name gold cannot signify that real essence. It is therefore by their nominal essences that substances are ranked into sorts under several denominations, which nominal essences being nothing but abstract, complex ideas, made up in various men of various collections of simple ideas which they have observed or imagined to co-exist together, it is leadership plain the essences of the in Smarthphones, species of substances, and consequently the species themselves as ranked under distinct denominations, are of men's making. I do not say the substances themselves are made by act utilitarian, men, nor the likeness and agreement that is to be found in them, but the boundaries of the species, as marked by distinct names, are made by Improved Technology in Smarthphones, men. Leadership. But though men make the essences whereby the New and Technology in Smarthphones Essay, species of substances are limited and distinguished, yet they make them not so arbitrarily as they do in modes; for in substances they propose to themselves the real existence of things as the patterns they would follow, yet through their variety of skill or attention, their complex idea, made up of a collection of sensible qualities, signified by the same specific name, is in various men very different, the one putting in simple ideas that the other has omitted; but the real essences supposed of the species of things must be, if there were any such, invariably the same. If the act utilitarian, first sorting of individuals into their lowest species depend on the mind of man, as has been shown, it is much more evident that the more comprehensive classes, called genera by the masters of logic, are so, which are complex ideas designedly imperfect, out of which are purposely left several of Improved Technology in Smarthphones, those qualities that are to be found constantly in the things themselves as they exist; for as the mind, to make general ideas comprehending several particular beings, leaves out those of time and place, and others that make them incommunicable to more than one individual, so, to make others yet more general that may comprehend different sorts, it leaves out these qualities that distinguish them, and puts into its new collection only such ideas as are common to descartes several sorts; so that in New and in Smarthphones Essay, this whole business of genus and species, the genus, or more comprehensive, is but a partial conception of what is in the species, and the species but a partial idea of pathfinder, what is to be found in each individual.

This is suited to the true end of speech, which is to denote by one short sound a great many particulars as they agree in one common conception genera ; and species, then, seem to me to be nothing but sorting of things in order to denomination, and the essence of each sort is nothing but the New and Technology in Smarthphones Essay, abstract idea to pathfinder which the denomination is annexed; for Technology Essay a little attention will teach us that to particular things nothing is essential, but as soon as they come to be ranked under any general name, which is the same as to theologian be reckoned of any species, then presently something is essential to them, viz. all that is comprehended in the complex idea that the name stands for. This further is to be observed concerning substances, that they alone, of all the several sorts of New and Improved Technology Essay, ideas, have proper names; to which we may add, that though the specific names of substances can signify nothing but the abstract ideas in the mind of the speaker, and so consequently the fitts, substances that agree to that idea, yet men, in their use of Essay, them, often substitute them in the room of, and would suppose them to stand for, things having the real essence of that species, which breeds great confusion and uncertainty in their use of words. Chap. 7. Words have a double use: 1st, to record our own thoughts; and for this any words will serve, so they be kept constantly to and change the same ideas. 2nd. To communicate our thought with others, and for this use they must be common signs standing for the same ideas in those who have communication together.

In communication they have also a double use: The first of these is that which serves for the upholding of common conversation and Improved in Smarthphones commerce. The philosophical use is to convey the precise notions of mathematician, things, and to express in general propositions certain and undoubted truths, which the mind may rest upon, and be satisfied with in its search after true knowledge. In this last use of words they are especially liable to great imperfections of uncertainty and obscurity in their signification. Words naturally signifying nothing, it is necessary that their signification, i. e. the precise ideas they stand for, be settled and retained, which is hard to be done: 1st. Where the ideas they stand for are very complex, and made up of a great number of ideas put together. 2nd. Where the ideas that make up the Improved Technology in Smarthphones Essay, complex one they stand for have no connection in nature, and so there is mathematician no settled standard anywhere existing in nature to New and Improved rectify and mice and men adjust them by. 3rd. Where the signification of the word is referred to New and in Smarthphones Essay a standard existing, which yet is fitts not easy to be known.

4th. Where the signification of the word and the real essence of the thing are not exactly the Technology Essay, same. The names of mixed modes are very much liable to doubtfulness, for the two first of these reasons; and the names of substances chiefly for the two latter. According to these rules, as well as experience, we shall find, First, That the names of simple ideas are the least liable to uncertainty, 1st, because they are simple, and and change so easily got and retained; 2nd, because they are referred to nothing but that very perception which things in nature are fitted to produce in us. Second. That names of mixed modes are very uncertain, because the complex ideas they are the signs of have no standing patterns existing in nature whereby to be regulated and adjusted; their archetypes are only in the minds of men, and therefore uncertain to be known, and being very much compounded and often decompounded, are very hardly to be exactly agreed on and retained. New And Improved Essay. Where shall one find an assemblage of all the ideas the word Glory stands for, existing together? And the precise complex idea the name Justice is the sign of, is theologian seldom, I imagine, settled and Improved Technology retained. Third, The names of substances are very uncertain, because their complex ideas not being voluntary compositions, but referred to patterns that exist, are yet referred to patterns that cannot at all be known, or at least can be known but very imperfectly. 1st. As has been showed, sometimes the names of substances are supposed to stand for their supposed real essences.

Everything having a real constitution, whereby it is what it is, this is apt to be called its essence, as if it were the essence of a species; but whether it be or no, this is certain, that, it being utterly unknown, it is impossible to know in such a supposition or reference, of the name which any word stands for. 2nd. Sometimes the mathematician, ideas the names of substances stand for are copied from the sensible qualities to New and Essay be observed in bodies existing; but in act utilitarian, this, which is their proper use, it is not easy to adjust their significations, because the New and Improved in Smarthphones, qualities that are to be found in substances out of which we make their complex ideas, being for the most part powers, they are almost infinite, and one of them having no more right than another to be put into our complex ideas, which are to be copies of these originals, it is very hard by these patterns to adjust the signification of their names, and therefore it is very seldom that the same name of any substance stands in two men for the same complex idea. Chap. 8. To this natural imperfection of words it is not unusual for men to add voluntary abuses, some whereof I take notice of; as, 1st, the using of words without any clear and determinate signification: this whole sects in philosophy and religion are frequently guilty of, there being very few of them who, either out of and posner, affectation of New and in Smarthphones Essay, singularity, or to cover some weak part of descartes mathematician, their system, do not make use of some terms which it is Improved Technology in Smarthphones Essay plain have no clear and determinate ideas annexed to them. Besides these appropriated terms of parties, which never had any distinct meaning, there are others who use ordinary words of common language, without having in their minds any precise ideas they stand for; it is enough that they have learned the words that are common in the language of theologian, their country, which serving well enough to be produced in Improved Technology in Smarthphones Essay, talk, they dispense with themselves from being solicitous about any clear notions to be signified by them; and if men who have them often in descartes, their mouths should be examined what they mean by Reason or Grace , c., they would often be found to Essay have in their minds no distinct ideas which these and the like words were the act utilitarian, signs of. 2nd. Another abuse is inconstancy, or putting the same word as the sign sometimes of one idea, sometimes of Improved in Smarthphones, another, in the same discourse.

There is nothing more ordinary in all controversies, where one can seldom miss to find the same sound often put for different significations, and descartes that not only in the incidental parts of the discourse, but in those terms which are the most material in the debate, and on which the question turns. 3rd. To this may be added an New and Improved, affected obscurity, either in the use of old words, or the coining of new ones. To this nothing has so much contributed as the method and learning of the schools, where all has been adapted to leadership and change and measured by dispute. This way of proceeding unavoidably runs all into multiplication and perplexity of terms. This perverse abuse of language, having under the esteemed name of subtility gained the reputation and rewards of true knowledge, how much it has hindered real improvements the world is now satisfied. 4th.

The next abuse of language is the taking words for things: this most concerns the names of substances, for men having feigned to themselves peculiar and groundless ideas, proportionably as they have thought fit to contrive or espouse some certain system of natural philosophy, have suited names to them, which, growing into familiar use, came afterwards among their followers to carry with them the Essay, opinion of reality, as if they were the necessary and unavoidable marks of things themselves. Thus, substantial forms and intentional species, and abundance of such other terms, have by their common and unquestioned use carried men into the persuasion that there were such things, it being hard for them to believe that their fathers and masters, learned men and divines, should make use of names that stood for fancies only, that never had any real being in the world. The supposing words to stand for the real essences of substances is an abuse which I have already mentioned. 5th. Another more general, though less observed, abuse of words is, to suppose their signification so clear and settled that a man cannot be mistaken what ideas they stand for; and hence men think it strange to ask or be asked the meaning of their words, when yet it is plain that many times the certain signification of a man's words cannot be any otherwise known but by his telling what precise idea he makes any word the leadership, sign of. 6th. Figurative speeches and all the artificial ornaments of rhetoric are truly an Improved Technology Essay, abuse of language also; but this, like the best cream uk, fair sex, has too prevailing beauties in it to suffer itself ever to be spoken against, and New and Technology Essay it is in vain to find fault with those arts of numbing, deceiving wherein men find a pleasure to be deceived. Chap.

9. That which has nourished disputes and spread errors in New and Improved Technology, the world being chiefly the imperfection or abuse of words before mentioned, it would be of no small advantage to truth and quiet, if men would apply themselves seriously to a more careful and candid use of language, wherein I shall offer some easy and obvious cautions to those who have a mind to be ingenuous; for I am not so vain as to think of reforming so prevailing an abuse, wherein so many men imagine they find their account. Descartes Mathematician. Though I think nobody will deny, 1st, That every one should take care to use no word without a signification,#0151;no vocal sign without some idea he had in his mind, and would express by Improved in Smarthphones, it. 2nd. That the idea he uses a sign for theologian should be clear and New and Improved in Smarthphones Essay distinct; all the simple ideas it is made up of, if it be complex, should be settled. This, as it is crooks mice necessary in all our names of New and Improved Technology in Smarthphones Essay, complex ideas, so is most carefully to descartes mathematician be observed in moral names, which being compounded and decompounded of several simple ones, our ideas are not right as they should be, and consequently our words are full of uncertainty and obscurity, and neither others nor we ourselves know what we mean by them till we have so settled in our minds the complex idea we would have each word stand for, that we can readily enumerate all the particulars that make it up, and Improved Essay resolve it into all its component simple ones. 3rd. These ideas must be accommodated as near as we can to the common signification of the word in its ordinary use. It is act utilitarian this propriety of speech which gives the stamp under which words are current, and it is not for every private man to alter their value at pleasure. But because common use has left many if not most words very loose in their signification, and because a man is often under a necessity of using a known word in New and Technology in Smarthphones, some with a peculiar sense, therefore it is often his duty to in of mice and men show the meaning of this or that term, especially where it concerns the main subject of discourse or question.

This showing the meaning of New and in Smarthphones, our terms, to do it well must be suited to the several sorts of ideas they stand for. Fitts And Posner Model. The best, and in many cases the New and Technology, only, way to make known the meaning of the name of a simple idea is by producing it by the senses. The only fitts model way of making known the Technology in Smarthphones, meaning of the names of mixed modes, at least moral words, is by definition; and the best way of leadership and change, making known the meaning of the names of in Smarthphones Essay, most bodies is act utilitarian both by showing and by definition together; many of their distinguishing qualities being not so easily made known by New and Technology in Smarthphones, words, and many of them not without much pains and preparation discoverable by our senses. Chap. 10. What words signify, and how much we are to fitts beware that they impose not on us, I have shown, it being necessary to be premised to New and Improved in Smarthphones Essay our consideration of knowledge, the business of the next book; only, before I conclude this, I take notice of one ordinary distinction of words, because I think it gives us some light into our ideas; vix. Abstract and concrete terms, concerning which we may observe, 1st, That no two abstract ideas ever affirmed one of another. 2nd.

That simple ideas and modes have all of model, them abstract as well as concrete names; but substances only concrete, except some few abstract names of New and Improved Technology Essay, substances in pathfinder theologian, vain affected by the schools, which could never get into Technology in Smarthphones Essay, common use of corporietas and animalitas , c. The first of these seems to and change me to Improved in Smarthphones show us that two distinct ideas are two distinct essences that cannot be affirmed one of theologian, another. The latter carries with it a plain confession that men have no ideas of the real essences of the sorts of substances, since they have put into their languages no names for New and Improved in Smarthphones Essay them. Lib. IV. The two foregoing books were of ideas and words, this is theologian of knowledge. Chap.

1. The first chapter shows that knowledge is nothing but the perception of the agreement or disagreement of any two ideas. This agreement or disagreement, for the clearer explaining of this matter, is reduced to these four sorts: Identity, Coëxistence, Real Existence, Relation. 1st. It is the first and fundamental act of our understanding to perceive the ideas it has, to know each what it is, and perceive wherein it differs from New and Technology Essay, any others; without this, the mind could neither have variety of thoughts nor discourse, judge or reason about them. By this faculty the mind perceives what idea it has when it sees a violet, and theologian knows blue is not yellow. 2nd. Our ideas of substances, as I have showed, consist in certain collections of single ideas which the specific name stands for; and our inquiry, for the most part, concerning substances, is what other qualities they have; which is no more but this, what other ideas coëxist and are to New and Technology Essay be found united with those of our complex ideas. Thus, whether gold be fixed, is to inquire whether the pathfinder theologian, power of abiding in the fire without wasting be an idea which coëxists in the same subject with those ideas of yellowness, weight, malleability, and fusibility, whereof my idea of Improved, gold is made up. Act Utilitarian. The 3rd sort of agreement is, whether a real existence out of my mind agrees to any idea I have there.

4th. The last sort of agreement or disagreement of in Smarthphones, any ideas is in any other sort of relation between them. Thus, sweetness is not bitterness , is of identity. Iron is susceptible of magnetical impressions , is of coëxistence. God is , is of existence. Two triangles upon equal basis between two parallels are equal , is act utilitarian of relation. Chap.

2. According to the different way of perceiving the New and Improved Technology Essay, agreement or disagreement of any of our ideas, so is the evidence of our knowledge different. Sometimes the and posner, mind perceives the agreement or disagreement of two ideas immediately; thus it perceives that red is not yellow, that a circle is not a triangle, that three is more than two, and equal to one and two; and this we may call intuitive knowledge . Improved Technology. When the and change, agreement or disagreement of Improved Technology Essay, any two ideas cannot be immediately perceived, but the mind makes use of the intervention of other ideas to best numbing cream uk show it, then (as the in Smarthphones, word imports) it is demonstration . Thus the mind not being able to bring the three angles of a triangle and two right ones so together as to be able immediately to perceive their equality, it makes use of some other angles to fitts and posner measure them by. To produce knowledge this way, there must be an Improved in Smarthphones Essay, intuitive knowledge of the leadership, agreement or disagreement of the intermediate ideas in each step of the deduction, for New and Improved in Smarthphones without that there can be no demonstration, the agreement or disagreement of the two ideas under consideration is not shown; for where any agreement or disagreement of any two ideas is not self-evident, i. e. cannot be immediately perceived, there it will always need a proof to show it. This sort, which may be called rational or demonstrative knowledge , however certain, is not so clear and evident as intuitive , because here the memory must intervene to retain the connection of all the in of mice, parts of the demonstration one with another, and be sure that none is New and Technology Essay omitted in the account, which in long deductions requires great attention to avoid mistake. Descartes Mathematician. Why demonstration is New and Improved in Smarthphones Essay generally thought to belong only to ideas of quantity, I shall not in this short epitome mention. These two sorts are all the knowledge we have of general truths. Of the existence of some particular finite beings we have knowledge by our senses, which we may call sensitive knowledge . Chap.

3. From what has been said, it follows: 1st. That we can have no knowledge where we have no ideas. 2nd. That our intuitive knowledge reaches not so far as our ideas, because the best tattoo numbing uk, greatest part of them cannot be so immediately compared as to New and Improved Technology discover the agreement or disagreement we seek. 3rd. Neither can rational and pathfinder theologian demonstrative knowledge make out the agreement or disagreement of all those of our ideas wherein we fail of New and Improved Technology in Smarthphones, intuitive knowledge, because we cannot always find mediums to connect them intuitively together. 4th. Sensitive knowledge reaching no further than the actual presence of particular things to our senses, is mathematician much narrower than either of the former.

That which I would infer from Improved, this is, that our knowledge is leadership and change not only infinitely short of the whole extent of beings, if we compare this little spot of New and, earth we are confined to, to that part of the universe which we have some knowledge of, which probably is, all of it, but a point in respect to what is utterly beyond our discovery, and consider the fitts model, vegetables, animals, rational corporeal creatures (not to New and mention the ranks and orders of spirits), and other things with different qualities suited to senses different from ours, whereof we have no notion at all, which may be in them, we shall have reason to model conclude that the things whereof we have ideas are very few in respect of those whereof we have none at all. New And Technology. In the next place, if we consider how few, how imperfect, and how superficial, those ideas are which we have of the things that lie nearest our examination, and are best known to us; and lastly, if we consider how few they are of those few ideas we have, whose agreement or disagreement we are able to act utilitarian discover, we shall have reason to conclude that our understandings were not proportioned to the whole extent of being, nor men made capable of Improved in Smarthphones, knowing all things, but that it fails us in fitts and posner model, the greatest part of the inquiry concerning those ideas we have. 1st. As to identity and New and in Smarthphones diversity, it is true our intuitive knowledge is as large as our ideas themselves; but, 2nd, on pathfinder the other side, we have scarce any general knowledge at all or the coëxistence of any ideas , because not being able to discover the causes whereon the secondary qualities of substances depend, nor any connection between such causes and our ideas, there are very few cases wherein we can know the coëxistence of any other idea with that complex one we have of any sort of substances, whereby our knowledge of substances comes to be almost none at all. 3rd. Improved In Smarthphones. As to other relations of our ideas, how far our knowledge may reach is yet uncertain; this I think, morality, if rightly studied, is act utilitarian capable of Technology in Smarthphones, demonstration as well as mathematics. 4th. As to existence, we have an intuitive knowledge of our own, a demonstrative one of a God, and leadership a sensible one of some few other things. I shall not here, in this short compendium I am giving of my thoughts, mention those particulars which I have set down to show up the New and Improved in Smarthphones, narrowness of our knowledge; that which I have here said may, I suppose suffice to convince men, what we know bears no proportion to that which we are invincibly ignorant of. Besides the extent of cream, our knowledge in respect of the Improved Technology, sorts of things, we may consider another kind of its extent, which is in respect of its universality. Act Utilitarian. When the ideas are abstract, our knowledge about them is Improved Essay general: abstract ideas are the essences of species, howsoever named, and are the foundations of universal and eternal verities.

Chap. 4. It will perhaps be said, that knowledge placed thus in the consideration of our ideas may be chimerical, and leave us ignorant of things as they really are in themselves, since we see men may often have very extravagant ideas; to which I answer, that our knowledge is real so far as our ideas are conformable to things, and no further. To be able to know what ideas are conformable to the realities of things, we must consider the different sorts of ideas I have above mentioned. 1st. Simple ideas we cannot but know to be conformable to things, because the mind not being able to leadership make any simple ideas to itself, those it has must needs be conformable to that power which is in things to produce them, which conformity is New and Improved Technology Essay sufficient for real knowledge. 2nd. All our complex ideas, but those of substances, are conformable to the reality of things; and this we may certainly know, because they being archetypes made by the mind, and not designed to be copies of anything existing, things are intended in our discourses and reasonings about these ideas no further than as they are conformable to these ideas. 3rd. Our complex ideas of substances being designed to be copies of archetypes existing without us, we can be no further sure that our knowledge concerning any of them is real, than the real existence of things has made it evident that such a collection of theologian, simple ideas, as our complex one is made up of, can coëxist together; the reason whereof is, because not knowing the real constitution on which these qualities depend, we cannot but by experience know which of them are, and which are not, capable to exist together in the same subject; and if we put other than such that are capable to exist together into any complex idea, our knowledge concerning such an idea of substance will be only Technology in Smarthphones concerning a chimera of our own, and not of any real being. Chap.

5. According to this account of knowledge, we may come to discover what truth is, which appears to be nothing else but the act utilitarian, joining or separating of signs according as things themselves agree or disagree. The joining or separating I here mean is, such as is made by affirmation and negation, and is called proposition . Now the signs we use being of two sorts, viz. ideas and words; propositions also are of Improved Essay, two sorts, viz. mental or verbal ; truth also is twofold, either real or barely verbal . Real truth in any proposition is when the crooks mice, terms are affirmed or denied as the ideas they stand for agree or disagree, and as the ideas also themselves agree to their archetypes. Verbal truth is when the affirmation or negation is made according to New and in Smarthphones Essay the agreement or disagreement of our ideas, but the pathfinder, ideas themselves have no conformity with their archetypes. Chap. 6. Truth being for the most part conveyed to New and Improved in Smarthphones our understandings, or considered by us in best, propositions, it will be of moment to examine what propositions are capable to convey to our understandings the certain knowledge of general truths. 1st. Then I say, that in all general propositions, where the terms are supposed to stand for New and Technology Essay species constituted and best cream uk determined by real essences distinct from the nominal, we are not capable of any certain knowledge, because not knowing that real essence, we cannot know what particular things have it, and Improved Essay so can never know what particular things are of that species. This frequently happens in propositions concerning substances in other things, not because in the species of other things there is no supposed real essence different from the nominal. 2nd. In all general propositions where the terms are substituted only in the place of the nominal essence or abstract idea, and so the act utilitarian, species determined by that alone, there we are capable of certainty as far as the agreement or disagreement of such abstract ideas can be perceived; but this also reaches but a very little way in New and, substances, because the necessary coëxistence or inconsistency of any other ideas with any of those that make up one complex one of any sort of substances, is in very few cases discoverable.

Chap. 7. There are a sort of propositions which, passing under the title of maxims, are by some men received as innates, and by in of and men, most esteemed as the foundations of knowledge; but if what we have said concerning self-evident or intuitive knowledge be well considered, we shall find that these dignified axioms are neither innate nor have any other self-evidence than a thousand other propositions, some whereof are known before them, and others altogether as clearly, and therefore they are neither innate, nor be the foundations of all our knowledge or reasonings as they are thought to be. Whatsoever is, is , and It is impossible for the same to be and not to be , it is granted are self-evident propositions; but he that considers the nature of the understanding and the ideas in New and Improved Technology in Smarthphones, it, and that it is unavoidable for the understanding to know its own ideas, and to theologian know those to be distinct that are so, must needs observe that these supposed fundamental principles of knowledge and reasoning are no more self-evident than that one is one, and red red, and that it is impossible one should be two, or red blue: of these and Essay the like propositions, we have as certain a knowledge as of those other called maxims, and a much earlier; and can anybody imagine that a child knows not that wormwood is not sugar, but by virtue of leadership, this axiom? That it is impossible for the same thing to Improved Essay be and not to be. Intuitive knowledge extends itself to all our ideas in respect of identical agreeement or disagreement, therefore all propositions made concerning this sort of agreement or disagreement, whether in more or less general terms, so the ideas they stand for be but known, are all equally self-evident. As to mathematician the agreement or disagreement of coëxistence, we have very little intuitive knowledge, and therefore concerning that there are very few self-evident propositions and little talk of axioms. Improved Essay. In the third sort of agreement, viz. relation, the mathematicians have dignified several general propositions concerning equality with the title of axioms, though these have no other sort of certainty than all other self-evident propositions; and though, when they are once made familiar to the mind, they are often made use of to show the absurdity of wrong reasoning and theologian erroneous opinions in particular instances; yet the way wherein the mind attains knowledge, is not by beginning and New and Improved Technology setting out from these general propositions, but in in of and men, the quite contrary method; it begins its knowledge in particulars, and New and Improved Technology in Smarthphones thence gradually enlarges it to more general ideas. Chap. 8. Besides these there are other propositions, which are many of them certain, but convey no real truth to our knowledge, being barely about the signification of words.

1st. Where any part of any complex idea is predicated of the name of crooks and men, that complex idea, such a proposition is only about the Technology Essay, signification of the in of mice and men, terms, and such are all propositions wherein more comprehensive terms are predicated of less comprehensive, as genera of New and Technology Essay, species or individuals. 2nd. Wherever two abstract terms are predicated one of another, there the proposition carries no real knowledge in it, but is barely about the import of names. Were such trifling propositions as these shut out of discourses, the way to theologian knowledge would be less perplexed with disputes than it is. Chap. 9. Universal propositions, that have certain truth or falsehood in them, concern essences only. The knowledge of existence goes no further than particulars of our own existences; it is plain we have such an intuitive knowledge, that nothing can be more evident. Chap. 10.

Of the existence of God there is demonstration, for New and Technology which we need go no further than ourselves for and posner a proof, though God has given * * * * *. Chap. 11. The existence of all other things can be known only by testimony of our senses; our knowledge reaches in in Smarthphones, this as far as our senses, and no further. Leadership And Change. For the existence of any other being having no necessary connection with any of the ideas I have in my memory, I cannot from them infer the necessary existence of any particular being, and can receive the knowledge of it only by the actual perception of Technology in Smarthphones Essay, my senses. Chap. 12. For the improvement of our knowledge, we must suit our methods to our ideas: in substances, where our ideas are but imperfect copies, we are capable of very little general knowledge, because few of our abstract ideas have a discoverable agreement or disagreement of coëxistence, and therefore in substances we must enlarge our knowledge by experiment and observation in particulars; but in modes and relations, where our ideas are archetypes, and real as well as nominal essences of species, there we attain general knowledge only by views of our own abstract ideas; and in them our inquiries not being concerning the agreement or disagreement of coëxistence, but of other relations more discoverable than that of coëxistence, we are capable of greater advances in act utilitarian, knowledge: and that which is proposed for the improvement of New and Improved Technology, it, is to settle in our minds clear and act utilitarian steady ideas, with their names or signs, and then to contemplate and pursue their connections, and agreements, and dependencies: whether any method may be found out as useful in other modes as Algebra is in the ideas of quantity, for the discovery of their habitudes and relations, cannot, beforehand, be determined, and therefore not to be despaired of. In the mean time, I doubt not but that Ethics might be improved to a much greater degree of certainty, if men, affixing moral names to clear and settled ideas, could with freedom and indifferency pursue them. Chap. 13.

Knowledge is not born with us, nor does it always force itself upon our understandings; animadversion and application is, in most parts of it, required, and New and in Smarthphones Essay that depends on the will; but when we have thoroughly surveyed, and to our utmost traced our idea, it depends not then on our wills whether we will be knowing or ignorant. Chap. 14. The shortness of our knowledge, not reaching to all the concernment we have, is supplied by that which we call judgment, whereby the mind takes ideas to agree or not agree; i. e. Descartes Mathematician. any proposition to be true or false, without perceiving a demonstrative evidence in the proofs. Chap. 15. The ground on which such propositions are received for true, is what we call probability , and the entertainment the mind gives such propositions is called assent , belief , or opinion , which is the admitting any proposition to be true without certain knowledge that it is so. The grounds of probability are these two.#0151;1st.

The conformity of anything with our own knowledge, observation, or experience. 2nd. The testimony of others, vouching their observation and experience. Improved Technology. Chap. 16. The variety of these in fitts, concurring or counter-balancing circumstances, affording matter for assent in several degrees of assurance or doubting, is New and Technology too great to be set down in an extract.

Chap. In Of And Men. 17. Error is not a fault of New and, our knowledge, but a mistake of judgment, giving assent to what is not true; the causes whereof are these#0151; First. Want of proofs, whether such as may be or as cannot be had. Secondly. Want of ability to use them. Thirdly.

Want of will to use them. Leadership. Fourthly. Wrong measures of probability, which are these four#0151; Doubtful opinions taken for principles. Received hypotheses. Predominant passions. Authority. Chap. 18. Reason, that serves us to the discovery of both demonstration and probability, seems to me to have four parts#0151;1st. The finding out of proofs. 2nd.

The laying them in their due order for New and the discovery of truth. 3rd. Pathfinder Theologian. In the Improved Technology in Smarthphones, perception of the more or less clear connection of the ideas in and posner, each part of the deduction. 4th, and last of all, The drawing a right judgment and conclusion from the whole. By which it will appear that syllogism is not the great instrument of reason, it serving but only to Technology the third of these, and that only, too, to show another's wrong arguing; but it helps not reason at crooks in of mice, all in the search of Technology in Smarthphones, new knowledge, nor the discovery of yet unknown truths, and the proofs of act utilitarian, them, which is the New and Technology in Smarthphones Essay, chief use of that faculty, and fitts not victory in dispute, or the silencing of wranglers.

Chap. 19. Faith is by some men so often made use of in opposition to reason, that he who knows not their distinct bounds will be at a loss in Improved in Smarthphones Essay, his inquiries concerning matters of religion. Matters of reason are such propositions as may be known by the natural use of our faculties, and are deducible from ideas received from sensation or reflection. Matters of faith, such as are made known by supernatural revelation.

The distinct principles and evidence of these two, being rightly considered, show where faith excludes or overrules reason, and where not. 1. Original revelation cannot be assented to contrary to the clear principles of pathfinder, our natural knowledge, because, though God cannot lie, yet it is impossible that any one, to whom a revelation is made, should know it to be from God more certainly than he knows such truths. New And Improved In Smarthphones Essay. 2. But original revelation may silence reason in any proposition, whereof reason gives but a probable assurance, because the assurance that it is a revelation from God may be more clear than any probable truth can be. 3. Pathfinder Theologian. If original revelation cannot, much less can traditional revelation be assented to, contrary to our natural clear and evident knowledge; because, though what God reveals cannot be doubted of, yet he to New and Improved in Smarthphones Essay whom the revelation is not originally made, but has only received it by the delivery or tradition of other men, can never so certainly know that it was a revelation made by God, nor that he understands the act utilitarian, words aright in which it is delivered to him. Nay, he cannot know that he ever heard or read that proposition which is supposed revealed to another, so certainly as he knows those truths. Though it be a revelation that the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised, yet it not being revealed anywhere that such a proposition, delivered by a certain man, is a revelation, the believing of Improved Technology in Smarthphones Essay, such a proposition to be a revelation is not a matter of faith, but of reason; and so it is if the question be whether I understand it in the right sense.

According to these principles, I conclude all with a division of the sciences into and change, three sorts#0151;1st. Fysikh , or the knowledge of things, whether bodies or spirits, or of any of Improved, their affections in their true natures; the end of this is best bare speculation. Improved In Smarthphones. 2nd. Act Utilitarian. Praktikh , or the rules of operation about New and Improved Technology Essay things in our power, and principally those which concern our conduct; the leadership and change, end of this is action. 3rd. Shmiwtikh , or the knowledge of signs, i. e. ideas and words, as subservient to the other two, which if well considered, would perhaps produce another kind of logic and critique than has yet been thought on. essay on ww1 facts About World War I. T he First World War was truly #145;the Great War#146;. Its origins were complex. Its scale was vast. Its conduct was intense. Improved In Smarthphones Essay. Its impact on military operations was revolutionary. Its human and material costs were enormous. And its results were profound. The war was a global conflict.

Thirty-two nations were eventually involved. Twenty-eight of crooks in of mice these constituted the Allied and Associated Powers, whose principal belligerents were the British Empire, France, Italy, Russia, Serbia, and the United States of America. They were opposed by the Central Powers: Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria, Germany, and the Ottoman Empire. The war began in the Balkan cockpit of New and Technology Essay competing nationalisms and ancient ethnic rivalries. Hopes that it could be contained there proved vain. Expansion of the war was swift. Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia on 28 July 1914; Germany declared war on Russia on 1 August. Crooks Mice And Men. Germany declared war on France on 3 August and invaded Belgium. France was invaded on 4 August. New And Technology In Smarthphones Essay. German violation of Belgian neutrality provided the British with a convenient excuse to enter the war on the side of France and Russia the same evening. Austria-Hungary declared war on Russia on 6 August.

France and Great Britain declared war on Austria-Hungary six days later. The underlying causes of these events have been intensively researched and debated. Modern scholars are less inclined to allocate blame for the outbreak of war than was the case in the past. They have sought instead to fitts and posner understand the fears and Improved in Smarthphones, ambitions of the governing lites of Europe who took the fateful decisions for crooks and men, war, particularly that of imperial Germany. Fears were more important than ambitions. Of the Technology Essay, powers involved in the outbreak of descartes war, only Serbia had a clear expansionist agenda. The French hoped to recover the provinces of Alsace and Lorraine lost to Germany as a result of their defeat in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1, but this was regarded as an attempt at restitution rather than acquisition. Otherwise, defensive considerations were paramount. The states who embarked on the road to war in 1914 wished to preserve what they had.

This included not only their territorial integrity but also their diplomatic alliances and their prestige. These defensive concerns made Europe's statesmen take counsel of their fears and submit to the tyranny of events. The Austrians feared for the survival of their multi-racial Empire if they did not confront the threat of Serb nationalism and Panslavism. The Germans feared the Technology in Smarthphones Essay, consequences to leadership themselves of allowing Austria, their closest and only reliable ally, to be weakened and humiliated. The Russians feared the threat to their prestige and New and Improved Essay, authority as protector of the Slavs if they allowed Austria to defeat and humiliate Serbia. The French feared the superior population numbers, economic resources, and military strength of their German neighbours. France's principal defence against the threat of German power was its alliance with Russia. In Of Mice. This it was imperative to defend.

The British feared occupation of the Low Countries by a hostile power, especially a hostile power with a large modern navy. But most of New and Improved Technology all they feared for the long-term security of their Empire if they did not support France and Russia, their principal imperial rivals, whose goodwill they had been assiduously cultivating for a decade. All governments feared their peoples. Some statesmen welcomed the war in the belief that it would act as a social discipline purging society of dissident elements and encouraging a return to patriotic values. Others feared that it would be a social solvent, dissolving and transforming everything it touched. The process of expansion did not end in August 1914. Other major belligerents took their time and waited upon theologian, events. Italy, diplomatically aligned with Germany and Austria since the Triple Alliance of 1882, declared its neutrality on 3 August.

In the following months it was ardently courted by France and Britain. On 23 May 1915 the Italian government succumbed to Allied temptations and declared war on Austria-Hungary in pursuit of territorial aggrandizement in the Trentino. Bulgaria invaded Serbia on 7 October 1915 and New and Improved Technology in Smarthphones, sealed that pugnacious country's fate. Serbia was overrun. The road to Constantinople was opened to the Central Powers. Romania prevaricated about which side to join, but finally chose the Allies in August 1916, encouraged by the success of the Russian 'Brusilov Offensive'. It was a fatal miscalculation. Pathfinder Theologian. The German response was swift and decisive. Romania was rapidly overwhelmed by two invading German armies and its rich supplies of Improved Technology wheat and oil did much to keep Germany in the war for another two years. Act Utilitarian. Romania joined Russia as the other Allied power to suffer defeat in the war.

It was British belligerency, however, which was fundamental in turning a European conflict into a world war. Britain was the Improved, world's greatest imperial power. The British had world-wide interests and world-wide dilemmas. They also had world-wide friends. Germany found itself at war not only with Great Britain but also with the dominions of Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and South Africa and with the greatest British imperial possession, India. Concern for leadership, the defence of India helped bring the British into conflict with the Ottoman Empire in November 1914 and resulted in a major war in the Middle East. Most important of all, perhaps, Britain's close political, economic, and Technology in Smarthphones, cultural ties with the United States of America, if they did not ensure that nation's eventual entry into leadership and change, the war, certainly made it possible. The American declaration of war on in Smarthphones, Germany on 6 April 1917 was a landmark not only in crooks in of, the history of the United States but also in that of Europe and the world, bringing to an end half a millennium of European domination and ushering in 'the American century'. The geographical scale of the conflict meant that it was not one war but many. New And Essay. On the Western Front in best tattoo numbing cream, France and Belgium the French and their British allies, reinforced from 1917 onwards by the Americans, were locked in New and Technology in Smarthphones, a savage battle of attrition against the German army. Here the war became characterized by act utilitarian increasingly elaborate and sophisticated trench systems and field fortifications.

Dense belts of barbed wire, concrete pillboxes, intersecting arcs of machine-gun fire, and accumulating masses of quick-firing field and heavy artillery rendered man#156;uvre virtually impossible. Essay. Casualties were enormous. The first phase of the war in the west lasted until November 1914. This witnessed Germany's attempt to defeat France through an theologian enveloping movement round the New and Technology in Smarthphones Essay, left flank of the French armies. The plan met with initial success. The advance of the German armies through Belgium and tattoo uk, northern France was dramatic. New And Improved Technology Essay. The French, responding with an offensive in fitts model, Lorraine, suffered an New and Technology Essay almost catastrophic national defeat. France was saved by the iron nerve of its commander-in-chief, General J. J. C. Joffre, who had not only the intelligence but also the strength of character to numbing cream extricate himself from the ruin of his plans and order the historic counter-attack against the German right wing, the 'miracle of the Marne'. The German armies were forced to retreat and to entrench. Their last attempt at a breakthrough was stopped by New and in Smarthphones Essay French and British forces near the small Flemish market town of Ypres in November.

By Christmas 1914 trench lines stretched from the Belgian coast to the Swiss frontier. Although the events of 1914 did not result in a German victory, they left the Germans in a very strong position. The German army held the strategic initiative. It was free to retreat to positions of tactical advantage and to reinforce them with all the skill and ingenuity of German military engineering. Enormous losses had been inflicted on France. Two-fifths of France's military casualties were incurred in 1914. These included a tenth of the officer corps.

German troops occupied a large area of northern France, including a significant proportion of French industrial capacity and act utilitarian, mineral wealth. These realities dominated the second phase of the New and Technology Essay, war in the west. Best Tattoo Numbing Cream Uk. This lasted from November 1914 until March 1918. It was characterized by the unsuccessful attempts of the French and their British allies to evict the German armies from French and Belgian territory. During this period the Germans stood mainly on the defensive, but they showed during the Second Battle of Ypres (22 April-25 May 1915), and more especially during the Battle of Verdun (21 February-18 December 1916), a dangerous capacity to disrupt their enemies' plans. The French made three major assaults on the German line: in the spring of 1915 in Artois; in the autumn of 1915 in Champagne; and in the spring of 1917 on the Aisne (the 'Nivelle Offensive'). These attacks were characterized by the intensity of the fighting and the absence of New and Technology in Smarthphones achievement. Little ground was gained. Act Utilitarian. No positions of strategic significance were captured. Casualties were severe. New And In Smarthphones Essay. The failure of the Nivelle Offensive led to descartes a serious breakdown of morale in the French army.

For much of the rest of 1917 it was incapable of in Smarthphones Essay major offensive action. The British fared little better. Although their armies avoided mutiny they came no closer to breaching the German line. During the battles of the Somme (1 July19 November 1916) and and men, the Third Battle of in Smarthphones Ypres (31 July-12 November 1917) they inflicted great losses on the German army at great cost to themselves, but the German line held and no end to the war appeared in sight. The final phase of the act utilitarian, war in the west lasted from 21 March until 11 November 1918. This saw Germany once more attempt to Technology Essay achieve victory with a knock-out blow and act utilitarian, once more fail. The German attacks used sophisticated new artillery and infantry tactics. They enjoyed spectacular success. The British 5th Army on the Somme suffered a major defeat. But the British line held in front of Amiens and later to the north in front of Ypres. No real strategic damage was done.

By midsummer the New and Technology in Smarthphones, German attacks had petered out. The German offensive broke the trench deadlock and returned movement and man#156;uvre to the strategic agenda. Act Utilitarian. It also compelled closer Allied military co-operation under a French generalissimo, General Ferdinand Foch. The Allied counter-offensive began in July. At the Battle of Amiens, on 8 August, the British struck the German army a severe blow.

For the rest of the war in the west the Germans were in retreat. On the Improved Essay, Eastern Front in Galicia and Russian Poland the Germans and their Austrian allies fought the gallant but disorganized armies of Russia. Best Tattoo Cream. Here the distances involved were very great. Artillery densities were correspondingly less. Man#156;uvre was always possible and cavalry could operate effectively. This did nothing to lessen casualties, which were greater even than those on the Western Front. The war in the east was shaped by German strength, Austrian weakness, and Russian determination. German military superiority was apparent from the start of the war. The Russians suffered two crushing defeats in 1914, at Tannenberg (26-31 August) and the Masurian Lakes (5-15 September). Improved In Smarthphones. These victories ensured the security of Germany's eastern frontiers for the rest of the war. They also established the military legend of Field-Marshal Paul von Hindenburg and General Erich Ludendorff, who emerged as principal directors of the German war effort in the autumn of 1916.

By September 1915 the Russians had been driven out of Poland, Lithuania, and Courland. Austro-German armies occupied Warsaw and the Russian frontier fortresses of Ivangorod, Kovno, Novo-Georgievsk, and Brest-Litovsk. These defeats proved costly to Russia. They also proved costly to leadership and change Austria. Austria had a disastrous war. Italian entry into the war compelled the Improved in Smarthphones Essay, Austrians to crooks in of mice fight an three fronts: against Serbia in the Balkans; against Russia in Galicia; against Essay Italy in the Trentino. This proved too much for Austrian strength.

Their war effort was characterized by dependency on Germany. Germans complained that they were shackled to the 'Austrian corpse'. The war exacerbated the Austro-Hungarian Empire's many ethnic and national tensions. By 1918 Austria was weary of the war and desperate for peace. This had a major influence on the German decision to seek a victory in the west in the spring of 1918. Perceptions of the Russian war effort have been overshadowed by descartes mathematician the October Revolution of New and Improved in Smarthphones Essay 1917 and by crooks in of Bolshevik 'revolutionary defeatism' which acquiesced in Technology Essay, the punitive Treaty of Brest-Litovsk (14 March 1918) and took Russia out of the act utilitarian, war. This has obscured the astonishing Russian determination to keep faith with the Franco-British alliance. Without the Russian contribution in the east it is far from certain that Germany could have been defeated in the west. New And Technology In Smarthphones. The unhesitating Russian willingness to in of mice aid their western allies is nowhere more apparent than in the 'Brusilov Offensive' (June-September 1916), which resulted in the capture of the Technology Essay, Bukovina and large parts of Galicia, as well as 350,000 Austrian prisoners, but at a cost to Russia which ultimately proved mortal.

In southern Europe the Italian army fought eleven indecisive battles in leadership, an attempt to New and Improved Technology in Smarthphones Essay dislodge the Austrians from their mountain strongholds beyond the Isonzo river. In October 1917 Austrian reinforcement by seven German divisions resulted in a major Italian defeat at Caporetto. The Italians were pushed back beyond the leadership, Piave. This defeat produced changes in the Italian high command. Improved Technology Essay. During 1918 Italy discovered a new unity of purpose and a greater degree of organization. On 24 October 1918 Italian and British forces recrossed the Piave and split the Austrian armies in two at Vittorio Veneto. Austrian retreat turned into rout and then into surrender.

In the act utilitarian, Balkans the Serbs fought the Austrians and New and Improved Essay, Bulgarians, suffering massive casualties, including the highest proportion of servicemen killed of any belligerent power. In October 1915 a Franco-British army was sent to Macedonia to operate against the Bulgarians. It struggled to have any influence on the war. The Germans mocked it and declared Salonika to be the biggest internment camp in Europe, but the French and British eventually broke out of the pathfinder, malarial plains into the mountainous valleys of the in Smarthphones, Vardar and Struma rivers before inflicting defeat on Bulgaria in the autumn of 1918. In the Middle East British armies fought the Turks in a major conflict with far-reaching consequences. Here the war was characterized by leadership and change the doggedness of Turkish resistance and by the constant struggle against climate, terrain, and disease. Improved In Smarthphones. The British attempted to knock Turkey out of the war with an attack on leadership, the Gallipoli peninsula in April 1915, but were compelled to Improved Technology in Smarthphones withdraw at the end of the year, having failed to break out from their narrow beach-heads in the face of stubborn Turkish resistance, coordinated by a German general, Liman von Sanders. The British also suffered another humiliating reverse in Mesopotamia when a small army commanded by Major-General C. V. F. Townshend advanced to Ctesiphon but outran its supplies and was compelled to surrender at Kut-al-Amara in act utilitarian, April 1916.

Only after the appointment of Sir Stanley Maude to the command of British forces in Mesopotamia did Britain's superior military and economic strength begin to assert itself. Maude's forces captured Baghdad in March 1917, the first clear-cut British victory of the war. The following June General Sir Edmund Allenby was appointed to command British forces in Egypt. New And Technology. He captured Jerusalem by Christmas and in September 1918 annihilated Turkish forces in Palestine. Act Utilitarian. Turkey surrendered on 31 October 1918. The war also found its way to tropical Africa. Germany's colonies in West and south-west Africa succumbed to New and Improved Technology in Smarthphones British and South African forces by tattoo cream the spring of 1915. In East Africa, however, a German army of locally raised black African soldiers commanded by Colonel Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck conducted a brilliant guerrilla campaign, leading over 100,000 British and South African troops a merry dance through the New and in Smarthphones Essay, bush and surrendering only act utilitarian, after the defeat of Germany in Europe became known. On and New and Improved Technology in Smarthphones Essay, under the oceans of the fitts and posner, world, Great Britain and New and Essay, Germany contested naval supremacy. Surface battles took place in the Pacific, the south Atlantic, and the North Sea.

The British generally had the better of best tattoo uk these despite suffering some disappointments, notably at Coronel (1 November 1914) and Jutland (31 May-1 June 1916), the only major fleet engagement, during which Admiral Sir John Jellicoe failed to deliver the expected Nelsonic victory of total annihilation. Submarine warfare took place in Improved Essay, the North Sea, the and posner, Black Sea, the Atlantic, the Mediterranean, and the Baltic. German resort to unrestricted submarine warfare (February 1917) brought Britain to Improved Technology in Smarthphones Essay the verge of ruin. German violation of international law and sinking of American ships also helped bring the United States into the war on the Allied side. The British naval blockade of Germany, massively reinforced by the Americans from April 1917, played an important role in German defeat. The geographical scale of the conflict made it very difficult for political and military leaders to leadership control events. The obligations of coalition inhibited strategic independence. Short-term military needs often forced the great powers to allow lesser states a degree of licence they would not have enjoyed in peacetime.

Governments' deliberate arousal of popular passions made suggestions of New and Essay compromise seem treasonable. The ever-rising cost of the military means inflated the political ends. Hopes of a peaceful new world order began to replace old diplomatic abstractions such as 'the balance of power'. Rationality went out of season. War aims were obscured. Strategies were distorted. Great Britain entered the war on proclaimed principles of international law and in mice, defence of the rights of small nations. By 1918 the New and Improved Technology in Smarthphones Essay, British government was pursuing a Middle Eastern policy of naked imperialism (in collaboration with the French), while simultaneously encouraging the aspirations of Arab nationalism and promising support for the establishment of a Jewish national home in Palestine.

It was truly a war of illusions. Europe's political and descartes, military leaders have been subjected to much retrospective criticism for their belief that the #145;war would be over by Christmas'. This belief was not based on complacency. Even those who predicted with chilling accuracy the murderous nature of First World War battlefields, such as the Polish banker Jan Bloch, expected the war to be short. This was because they also expected it to be brutal and New and, costly, in both blood and treasure. No state could be expected to sustain such a war for very long without disastrous consequences. The war which gave the lie to these assumptions was the American Civil War.

This had been studied by crooks European military observers at close quarters. Most, however, dismissed it. This was particularly true of the Prussians. Their own military experience in the wars against Austria (1866) and Improved in Smarthphones Essay, France (1870-1) seemed more relevant and descartes, compelling. These wars were both short. They were also instrumental. In 1914 the Germans sought to replicate the success of their Prussian predecessors. They aimed to fight a 'cabinet war' on the Bismarckian model. To do so they developed a plan of breath-taking recklessness which depended on the ability of the German army to defeat France in the thirty-nine days allowed for a war in the west. Strategic conduct of the First World War was dominated by German attempts to Improved Technology Essay achieve victory through knock-out blows.

Erich von Falkenhayn, German commander-in-chief from September 1914 until August 1916, was almost alone in his belief that Germany could obtain an outcome to the war satisfactory to its interests and those of its allies without winning smashing victories of total annihilation. Leadership And Change. His bloody attempt to win the Improved in Smarthphones, war by attrition at Verdun in 1916 did little to recommend the strategy to his fellow countrymen. The preference for knock-out blows remained. It was inherited from German history and act utilitarian, was central to Germany's pre-war planning. Pre-war German strategy was haunted by the fear of a war on two fronts, against France in the west and Russia in the east. Improved Technology Essay. The possibility of a diplomatic solution to this dilemma was barely considered by the military-dominated German government. A military solution was sought instead. Act Utilitarian. The German high command decided that the best form of defence was attack. They would avoid a war on two fronts by knocking out one of their enemies before the other could take the field.

The enemy with the slowest military mobilization was Russia. The French army would be in the field first. France was therefore chosen to receive the first blow. Once France was defeated the German armies would turn east and defeat Russia. The Schlieffen Plan rested on two assumptions: that it would take the Russians six weeks to Improved Technology in Smarthphones Essay put an tattoo cream uk army into the field; and that six weeks was long enough to defeat France. By 1914 the first assumption was untrue: Russia put an army into the field in New and, fifteen days. The second assumption left no margin for error, no allowance for and change, the inevitable friction of war, and New and Improved in Smarthphones, was always improbable. The failure of the Schlieffen Plan gave the First World War its essential shape. This was maintained by the enduring power of the German army, which was, in John Terraine's phrase, 'the motor of the war'. The German army was a potent instrument.

It had played a historic role in numbing cream, the emergence of the German state. It enjoyed enormous prestige. It was able to recruit men of talent and dedication as officers and NCOs. As a result it was well trained and well led. Technology Essay. It had the political power to command the resources of Germany's powerful industrial economy.

Germany's position at the heart of Europe meant that it could operate on interior lines of communication in a European war. The efficient German railway network permitted the movement of German troops quickly from front to front. The superior speed of the locomotive over leadership, the ship frustrated Allied attempts to use their command of the sea to operate effectively against the periphery of the Central Powers. The power of the German army was the fundamental strategic reality of the New and Technology in Smarthphones Essay, war. 'We cannot hope to win this war until we have defeated the German army,' wrote the commander-in-chief of the British Expeditionary Force, Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig. This was a judgement whose consequences some Allied political leaders were reluctant to best embrace. The German army suffered from two important strategic difficulties. The first of New and Improved Technology in Smarthphones Essay these was the inability of the German political system to forge appropriate instruments of strategic control.

The second was Great Britain. German government rested on fitts and posner model, the tortured personality of the New and Improved Technology in Smarthphones, Kaiser. It was riven by intrigue and indecision. Best Tattoo Cream Uk. The kind of centralized decision-making structures which eventually evolved in Britain and France (though not in Russia) failed to evolve in Germany. When the New and Technology, Kaiser proved incapable of coordinating German strategy, he was replaced not by a system but by other individuals, seemingly more effective.

Field Marshal Paul von Hindenburg radiated calm and best numbing cream, inspired confidence. This gave him the appearance of a great man but without the substance. General Erich Ludendorff was a military technocrat of outstanding talent, but he was highly strung and without political judgement. In 1918 his offensive strategy brought Germany to ruin. The failure to develop effective mechanisms of strategic control applied equally to the Austro-German alliance. The Austrians depended on German military and economic strength, but the Germans found it difficult to turn this into 'leverage'.

Austria was willing to take German help but not German advice. Only after the crushing reverses inflicted by Brusilov's offensive did the Austrians submit to German strategic direction. By then it was almost certainly too late. Germany's pre-war strategic planning was based entirely on winning a short war. British belligerency made this unlikely. The British were a naval rather than a military power. They could not be defeated by the German army, at least not quickly. The British could, if necessary, hold out even after their Continental allies had been defeated. They might even have chosen to do this. They had in the past and Essay, they would again in the not-too-distant future.

The German navy was too weak to defeat the British, but large enough to make them resentful and suspicious of German policy; it ought never to and men have been built. British entry into the war dramatically shifted the New and Improved Technology in Smarthphones, economic balance in favour of the Allies. Britain was one of the world's great industrial powers. Seventy-five per cent of the world's shipping was British built and much of it British owned. London was the world's greatest money and commodities market. British access to world supplies of food and descartes, credit and to imperial resources of manpower made them a formidable enemy, despite the 'contemptible little army' which was all they could put into Technology in Smarthphones, the field on the outbreak of war.

From about in of mice, mid-1916 onwards British economic, industrial, and manpower resources began to be fully mobilized. Germany was forced for the first time to confront the reality of material inferiority. Germany had increasingly to fight a war of scarcity, the Technology Essay, Allies increasingly a war of abundance. French strategy was dominated by the German occupation of theologian much of northern France and most of Belgium. At its closest point the New and Improved Technology in Smarthphones, German line was less than 40 miles from Paris. A cautious, defensive strategy was politically unacceptable and psychologically impossible, at least during the best tattoo cream uk, first three years of the war. During 1914 and 1915 France sacrificed enormous numbers of men in the attempt to evict the Germans. This was followed by the torment of Verdun, where the Technology in Smarthphones, Germans deliberately attempted to 'bleed France white'. French fears of military inferiority were confirmed. If France was to prevail its allies would have to contribute in kind. For the British this was a radical departure from the historic norm and and change, one which has appalled them ever since.

British strategy became increasingly subordinated to the needs of the Essay, Franco-British alliance. The British fought the war as they had to, not as they wanted to. The British way in warfare envisaged a largely naval war. A naval blockade would weaken Germany economically. If the German navy chose not to act utilitarian break the stranglehold Germany would lose the war. If it did choose to fight it would be annihilated. Technology In Smarthphones. British maritime superiority would be confirmed. Neutral opinion would be cowed. Fresh allies would be encouraged into the fight.

The blockade would be waged with greater ruthlessness. Military operations would be confined to the dispatch of a small professional expeditionary force to help the French. Remaining military forces would be employed on the periphery of the Central Powers remote from the act utilitarian, German army, where it was believed they would exercise a strategic influence out of all proportion to their size. The British never really fought the war they envisaged. The branch of the British army which sent most observers to the American Civil War was the Corps of Royal Engineers. And it was a Royal Engineers' officer, Lord Kitchener, who was one of the few European political and military leaders to recognize that the war would be long and require the complete mobilization of national resources. Kitchener was appointed Secretary of State for War on 5 August 1914. He doubted whether the French and the Russians were strong enough to defeat Germany without massive British military reinforcement.

He immediately sought to raise a mass citizen army. There was an overwhelming popular response to his call to arms. Kitchener envisaged this new British army taking the field in 1917 after the French and Improved Essay, Russian armies had rendered the German army ripe for defeat. They would be 'the last million men'. They would win the war and decide the peace. For the British a satisfactory peace would be one which guaranteed the long-term security of the British Empire. Crooks In Of And Men. This security was threatened as much by Britain's allies, France and Russia, as it was by Germany. It was imperative not only that the Allies win the war but also that Britain emerge from it as the dominant power. Kitchener's expectations were disappointed. By 1916 it was the French army which was ripe for defeat, not the German.

But the obligations of the French alliance were inescapable. Technology In Smarthphones. The British could not afford to acquiesce in a French defeat. French animosity and resentment would replace the valuable mutual understanding which had been achieved in the decade before the war. The French had a great capacity for making imperial mischief. Descartes. And so did the Russians. If they were abandoned they would have every reason for doing so. There seemed no choice.

The ill-trained and ill-equipped British armies would have to take the field before they were ready and be forced to take a full part in the attrition of German military power. The casualties which this strategy of New and Technology in Smarthphones 'offensive attrition' involved were unprecedented in British history. They were also unacceptable to some British political leaders. Winston Churchill and David Lloyd George (Prime Minister from December 1916), in particular, were opposed to tattoo numbing cream uk the British army 'chewing barbed wire' on the Western Front. They looked to use it elsewhere, against Germany's allies in the eastern Mediterranean, the Middle East, and New and Technology Essay, the Balkans. Their attempts to do this were inhibited by the need to keep France in the war. Best Tattoo Numbing Cream Uk. This could only New and in Smarthphones, be done in France and by fitts model fighting the German army. They were also inhibited by the war's operational and tactical realities. These imposed themselves on Gallipoli and in New and Essay, Salonika and in Italy just as they did on the Western Front.

Attempts to implement an Allied grand strategy enjoyed some success. Allied political and descartes, military leaders met regularly. At Chantilly in December 1915 and New and Technology in Smarthphones, December 1916 they determined to stretch the German army to its limits by simultaneous offensive action on the western, eastern, and Italian fronts. A Supreme Allied War Council was established at Versailles on 27 November 1917, and was given the power to control Allied reserves. Franco-British co-operation was especially close. This was largely a matter of practical necessity which relied on the mutual respect and understanding between French and British commanders-in-chief on the Western Front. The system worked well until the German Spring Offensive of 1918 threatened to divide the Allies.

Only then was it replaced by a more formal structure. But not even this attained the levels of leadership joint planning and control which became a feature of Anglo-American co-operation in the Second World War. Allied grand strategy was conceptually sound. The problems which it encountered were not principally ones of planning or of co-ordination but of Technology Essay performance. Achieving operational effectiveness on the battlefield was what was difficult.

This has given the war, especially the war in the west, its enduring image of boneheaded commanders wantonly sacrificing the lives of their men in fruitless pursuit of impossibly grandiose strategic designs. The battlefields of the First World War were the product of a century of economic, social, and political change. Europe in 1914 was more populous, more wealthy, and more coherently organized than ever before. The rise of nationalism gave states unprecedented legitimacy and authority. This allowed them to demand greater sacrifices from their civilian populations. Improvements in agriculture reduced the numbers needed to work on the land and provided a surplus of males of military age. They also allowed larger and larger armies to be fed and kept in the field for years at a time. Fitts. Changes in administrative practice brought about by the electric telegraph, the telephone, the typewriter, and the growth of railways allowed these armies to be assembled and deployed quickly. Industrial technology provided new weapons of unprecedented destructiveness.

Quick-firing rifled cannon, breech-loading magazine rifles, and machine-guns transformed the range, rapidity, accuracy, and deadliness of New and Improved Technology Essay military firepower. Best. They also ensured that in any future war, scientists, engineers, and mechanics would be as important as soldiers. These changes did much to make the First World War the first 'modern war'. But it did not begin as one. The fact of a firepower revolution was understood in New and Improved Essay, most European armies.

The consequences of it were not. The experience of the Russo-Japanese War (1904-5) appeared to offer a human solution to the problems of the crooks in of and men, technological battlefield. Victory would go to the side with the best-trained, most disciplined army, commanded by Essay generals of iron resolution, prepared to maintain the mathematician, offensive in the face of huge losses. As a result the opening battles of the war were closer in in Smarthphones Essay, conception and execution to those of the best tattoo uk, Napoleonic era than to the battles of 1916 onwards. It is difficult to say exactly when 'modern' war began, but it was apparent by the end of New and Essay 1915 that pre-war assumptions were false.

Well-trained, highly disciplined French, German, and Russian soldiers of high morale were repeatedly flung into battle by commanders of iron resolve. The results were barren of pathfinder strategic achievement. The human costs were immense. The 'human solution' was not enough. Essay. The search for a technological solution was inhibited not only by the tenacity of fitts and posner pre-war concepts but also by the limitations of the technology itself.

The principal instrument of education was artillery. And the mode of instruction was experience. Shell-fire was merciless to troops in the open. The response was to get out of the open and into Essay, the ground. Soldiers did not dig trenches out of perversity in order to be cold, wet, rat-infested, and lice-ridden. They dug them in numbing uk, order to survive. The major tactical problem of the war became how to break these trench lines once they were established and reinforced. For much of the Improved in Smarthphones, war artillery lacked the and posner, ability to find enemy targets, to hit them accurately, and to destroy them effectively. Contemporary technology failed to provide a man-portable wireless. New And Technology In Smarthphones Essay. Communication for most of the war was dependent on telephone or telegraph wires. These were always broken by shell-fire and difficult to protect.

Artillery and infantry commanders were rarely in voice communication and both usually lacked 'real time' intelligence of battlefield events; First World War infantry commanders could not easily call down artillery fire when confronted by an enemy obstruction. As a result the coordination of infantry and artillery was very difficult and act utilitarian, often impossible. Infantry commanders were forced to fall back on their own firepower and this was often inadequate. The infantry usually found itself with too much to do, and paid a high price for its weakness. Artillery was not only a major part of the problem, however. It was also a major part of the solution. New And. During 1918 Allied artillery on the western front emerged as a formidable weapon. Target acquisition was transformed by aerial photographic reconnaissance and the sophisticated techniques of flash-spotting and sound-ranging. These allowed mathematically predicted fire, or map-shooting. Mathematician. The pre-registration of guns on enemy targets by Technology actual firing was no longer necessary. Act Utilitarian. The possibility of surprise returned to the battlefield.

Accuracy was greatly improved by maintaining operating histories for individual guns. Battery commanders were supplied with detailed weather forecasts every four hours. Each gun could now be individually calibrated according to its own peculiarities and according to wind speed and direction, temperature, and humidity. All types and calibres of New and Improved in Smarthphones Essay guns, including heavy siege howitzers whose steep angle of fire was especially effective in trench warfare, became available in virtually unlimited numbers. Crooks Mice. Munitions were also improved. Poison gas shells became available for the first time in New and Improved Technology in Smarthphones Essay, large numbers. High explosive replaced shrapnel, a devastating anti-personnel weapon but largely ineffective against the earthworks, barbed wire entanglements, and concrete machine-gun emplacements which the infantry had to assault. Descartes Mathematician. Instantaneous percussion fuses concentrated the explosive effect of shells more effectively against barbed wire and reduced the cratering of the battlefield which had often rendered the New and Improved in Smarthphones, forward movement of supplies and reinforcements difficult if not impossible. Artillery-infantry co-operation was radically improved by aerial fire control. The tactical uses to which this destructive instrument were put also changed. And Posner. In 1915, 1916, and for much of 1917 artillery was used principally to kill enemy soldiers.

It always did so, sometimes in large numbers. But it always spared some, even in front-line trenches. These were often enough, as during the Improved Technology in Smarthphones, first day of the pathfinder, Battle of the Somme (1 July 1916), to inflict disastrous casualties on attacking infantry and New and Improved Essay, bring an entire offensive to a halt. From the autumn of 1917 and during 1918, however, artillery was principally used to suppress enemy defences. Command posts, telephone exchanges, crossroads, supply dumps, forming-up areas, and gun batteries were targeted.

Effective use was made of poison gas, both lethal and lachrymatory, and best numbing cream uk, smoke. The aim was to Improved Technology in Smarthphones Essay disrupt the enemy's command and control system and keep his soldiers' heads down until attacking infantry could close with them and bring their own firepower to bear. The attacking infantry were also transformed. In 1914 the British soldier went to war dressed like a gamekeeper in a soft cap, armed only with rifle and bayonet. In 1918 he went into act utilitarian, battle dressed like an industrial worker in a steel helmet, protected by a respirator against poison gas, armed with automatic weapons and mortars, supported by New and Improved Technology in Smarthphones tanks and ground-attack aircraft, and preceded by leadership and change a creeping artillery barrage of crushing intensity. Firepower replaced manpower as the instrument of victory. This represented a revolution in the conduct of war. The ever-increasing material superiority of the western Allies confronted the German army with major problems. Its response was organizational. As early as 1915 even the weakly armed British proved that they could always break into the German front-line trenches.

The solution was to deepen the trench system and limit the number of infantry in the front line, where they were inviting targets for enemy artillery. The burden of defence rested on machine-gunners carefully sited half a mile or so behind the front line. From the autumn of 1916 the Germans took these changes to their logical conclusion by instituting a system of 'elastic defence in depth'. The German front line was sited where possible on a reverse slope to make enemy artillery observation difficult. A formal front-line trench system was abandoned.

The German first line consisted of machine-gunners located in shell-holes, difficult to detect from the air. Their job was to disrupt an Improved Essay enemy infantry assault. This would then be drawn deep into the German position, beyond the supporting fire of its own guns, where it would be counter-attacked and destroyed by the bulk of the German infantry and artillery. This system allowed the Germans to survive against an Allied manpower superiority of more than 3:2 on the Western Front throughout 1917 and to inflict significant losses on best numbing, their enemies. The German system required intelligent and well-trained as well as brave soldiers to New and Technology in Smarthphones make it work. An increasing emphasis was placed on individual initiative, surprise, and speed. In 1918 specially trained #145;stormtroops', supported by a hurricane bombardment designed to disrupt their enemies' lines of communication and their command and control systems, were ordered to bypass points of resistance and advance deep into the enemy's rear.

The success they enjoyed was dramatic, and and men, much greater than anything achieved by the French and British, but it was not enough. Attacking German infantry could not maintain the momentum and inflict upon enemy commanders the New and Improved in Smarthphones Essay, kind of moral paralysis achieved by German armoured forces in best cream uk, 1940. The Allied line held and exhausted German infantry were eventually forced back by in Smarthphones Essay the accumulating weight and increasing sophistication of Allied material technology. The material solution to the problems of the First World War battlefield, favoured by the western Allies, was not in descartes, the gift of soldiers alone. It depended on Technology in Smarthphones, the ability of the armes' host societies to produce improved military technology in pathfinder, ever-greater amounts. This, in turn, depended on the effectiveness of their political institutions and the quality of their civilian morale.

It was a contest at which the liberal democracies of France and Great Britain (and eventually the in Smarthphones Essay, United States of act utilitarian America) proved more adept than the authoritarian regimes of Austria-Hungary, Germany, and Russia. The 'modern war' fought from Technology in Smarthphones Essay 1916 onwards resolved itself simply into a demand for more: more men, more weapons, more ammunition, more money, more skills, more morale, more food. Some of the demands were contradictory. Descartes Mathematician. More men meant more men for the armies and Improved Technology Essay, more men for the factories. Balancing the competing demands was never easy. 'Manpower' (a word first coined in 1915) became central to the war effort of all states.

The Allies were in a much stronger position than Germany. They had access not only to their home populations but also to descartes those of their empires. 630,000 Canadians, 412,000 Australians, 136,000 South Africans, and 130,000 New Zealanders served in the British army during the war. Very large numbers of Indian troops (800,000 in Mesopotamia alone) and a small number of Africans (perhaps 50,000) also served. (The British also employed several hundred thousand Chinese labourers to Improved Technology in Smarthphones work on their lines of communication.) The French recruited some 600,000 combat troops from tattoo numbing North and West Africa and a further 200,000 labourers. And of course there were the Americans. American troops arrived in France at the rate of 150,000 a month in 1918. Truly the new world had come in to redress the balance of the old. The British and French were particularly successful in mobilizing their economies. Improved. In Britain this had much to do with the work of David Lloyd George as Minister of Munitions (May 1915-July 1916). The grip of the leadership, skilled trade unions on industrial processes was relaxed.

Ancient lines of demarcation were blurred. Women replaced men in the factories. Research and New and Improved Technology in Smarthphones, development were given a proper place in industrial strategy. Prodigies of production were achieved. On 10 March 1915, at the Battle of Neuve Chapelle, the crooks in of and men, British Expeditionary Force struggled to accumulate enough shells for half an hour's bombardment. In the autumn of 1918 its 18-pounder field guns were firing a minimum of 100,000 rounds a day. The French performance was, in many ways, even more impressive, given that so much of their industrial capacity was in German hands. Not only New and Improved Technology in Smarthphones Essay, did the French economy supply the and change, French army with increasing amounts of old and new weaponry, but it also supplied most of the New and in Smarthphones Essay, American Expeditionary Force's artillery and aeroplanes.

The French aircraft industry was, arguably, the best in Europe and provided some of the leading aircraft of the war, including the Nieuport and the SPAD VII. Morale was also a key factor. All sides tried to explain and justify the war and used increasingly refined techniques of propaganda to numbing cream maintain commitment to the cause. Giving the impression of in Smarthphones Essay adversity shared equally among the classes became a key theme. One of the major threats to this was the in of mice, equality of Improved access to food supplies. And Posner. In Germany this proved increasingly difficult to Improved maintain.

Morale deteriorated and industrial efficiency suffered as a result. British agriculture did not perform particularly well during the war, but British maritime superiority and financial power allowed them to command the agricultural resources of fitts North and New and Improved in Smarthphones Essay, South America and Australasia. Food was one of the Allies#146; principal war-winning weapons. Leadership And Change. The degree of active resistance to New and in Smarthphones the war was low in most countries. But war-weariness set in everywhere by 1917. There were many strikes and much industrial unrest. Crooks In Of Mice And Men. In Russia this was severe enough to produce a revolution and then a Bolshevik coup d#146;tat which took Russia out of the war in 1918. The social consequences of this mass mobilization were less spectacular than is New and Technology sometimes claimed. There were advances for the organized working class, especially its trade unions, especially in Britain, and arguably for women, but the working class of Europe paid a high price on the battlefield for social advances at home.

And in the defeated states there was very little social advance anyway. The First World War redrew the map of Europe and fitts and posner model, the Middle East. Four great empires, the Romanov, the Hohenzollern, the Habsburg, and New and Improved, the Ottoman, were defeated and collapsed. They were replaced by a number of weak and sometimes avaricious successor states. Russia underwent a bloody civil war before the establishment of a Communist Soviet Union which put it beyond the pale of European diplomacy for a generation.

Germany became a republic branded at its birth with the stigma of defeat, increasingly weakened by the burden of Allied reparations and by inflation. Descartes. France recovered the Improved Technology in Smarthphones Essay, provinces of Alsace and Lorraine, but continued to in of be haunted by fear and loathing of Germany. Italy was disappointed by New and in Smarthphones Essay the territorial rewards of its military sacrifice. This provided fertile soil for Mussolini's Fascists, who had overthrown parliamentary democracy by 1924. Leadership And Change. The British maintained the integrity and independence of Belgium. Technology In Smarthphones Essay. They also acquired huge increases in imperial territory and imperial obligation.

But they did not achieve the crooks, security for the Empire which they sought. The white dominions were unimpressed by Essay the quality of British military leadership. The First World War saw them mature as independent nations seeking increasingly to go their own way. The stirrings of revolt in India were apparent as soon as the war ended. In 1922 the British were forced, under American pressure, to abandon the Anglo-Japanese alliance, so useful to them in protecting their Far Eastern empire. They were also forced to accept naval parity with the Americans and a bare superiority over the Japanese. 'This is not a peace,' Marshal Foch declared in 1919, 'but an armistice for twenty-five years.' The cost of fitts and posner model all this in New and Improved in Smarthphones Essay, human terms was 8.5 million dead and 21 million wounded out of some 65 million men mobilized. The losses among particular groups, especially young, educated middle-class males, were often severe, but the demographic shape of Europe was not fundamentally changed. The real impact was moral. The losses struck a blow at leadership, European self-confidence and pretension to superior civilization.

It was a blow, perhaps, whose consequences have not even now fully unfolded. From The Oxford Illustrated History of in Smarthphones Essay Modern War . Ed. Charles Townshend. Oxford: Oxford UP, 1997. Copyright 1997 by Oxford University Press.

In Book IV he suggests that immateriality is not needed for the great ends of religion, and in Book II he crafts a theory of personal identity that does not require (though it is not inconsistent with) the immateriality of the soul. In giving us his estimate of the limits of theologian, human understanding, Locke made some claims which surprised his contemporaries. New And! In IV 3, 6 he suggests that given our ignorance of substances, it was possible that God could make matter fitly disposed think. He suggested that it was no farther beyond our comprehension that motions of the body could give rise to mice and men pleasure and pain than that an Technology in Smarthphones immaterial soul could feel pain after the occurrence of some motions in the body. He suggested that the immateriality of the soul was not particularly important. In a passage from Book IV, Chapter 3, section 6, Locke writes: All the great ends of Morality and Religion, are well enough secured without the philosophical Proofs of the Soul's Immateriality; since it is evident that he who, at first made us beings to subsist here, sensible intelligent Beings, and for several years continued us in such a state, can and act utilitarian, will restore us to a like state of Sensibility in another World, and make us there capable to receive the Retribution he has designed to men, according to the doings in this life. New And Improved Technology In Smarthphones Essay! And therefore tis not a mighty necessity to determine one way or t'other, as some overzealous for or against the Immateriality of the Soul, have been foreward to make the World believe. These suggestions were often taken as stronger than intended.

Many of Locke's critics were suspicious that Locke had materialist tendencies. And Posner! Instead of the skeptical conclusions about immaterial versus material substance that Locke is clearly arguing for, his remarks were sometimes treated as proposing that matter can and does think. It hardly matters however. Samuel Clarke, for example, a student of Newton's and an orthodox Anglican theologian, engaged in a debate by correspondence or rather public pamphlet with Anthony Collins over this issue between 1707 and 1708. Clarke sought to show that from our ideas alone it would be possible to show that matter thinking would involve a contradiction.

If Clarke is right, Locke (even on Improved Technology in Smarthphones Essay the weaker interpretation I am proposing) would be wrong. There was an explosion of refutations of the claim that for all we know matter can think and the discussion of this issue lasted at least three quarters of the way through the eighteenth century. For accounts of this debate see Yolton (1983) and Martin and Baresi (2000) Locke added his Chapter “Of Identity and Diversity” (II. Theologian! xxvii) which gives his account of identity and New and, personal identity to the second edition of the Essay . Locke's account of personal identity turned out to in of be revolutionary. His account of Improved in Smarthphones, personal identity is embedded in a general account of identity. Crooks In Of Mice And Men! In this general account of identity Locke distinguishes between the identity of atoms, masses of atoms and New and Improved Technology in Smarthphones, living things. Each individual atom is the same at theologian, a time, and Improved Technology Essay, stays the same over time. So, there is no problem about the identity of atoms. Masses of leadership, atoms are individuated by their constituent atoms without regard to New and Technology Essay the way in which they are organized. Living things, by contrast, are individuated by their functional organization. Pathfinder! This organization is instantiated at New and Improved Essay, any time by descartes, a collection of atoms.

But the organization can persist through changes in the particles which make it up at least gradual change which continues the functions which the organization performs. Clearly the most important of Technology in Smarthphones, these functions is the continuation of the same life. It is the continuation of the same functional organization and thus the pathfinder, same life which is the criterion of identity for sameness of living thing, be it an oak or a horse. Locke holds that man is an animal and Improved Technology in Smarthphones Essay, is thus individuated just like other living things. So ‘man’ refers to a living body of a particular shape. Locke is perfectly aware that the definition of man is and posner not really settled, and that there are a variety of Improved Technology in Smarthphones, competing definitions. He argues for his own definition, which involves distinguishing between ‘man’ and ‘person’ by using a variety of thought experiments and deducing unacceptable consequences from competing definitions. He points out, for leadership, example, that while those who individuate man solely in terms of the possession of a soul can explain the sameness of New and Improved Technology in Smarthphones, man from infancy to old age, if they accept some doctrine of reincarnation, their definition requires that the same soul in different bodies be the in of and men, same man as much as infant and old man.

If the doctrine of reincarnation allows the soul of New and Essay, a man to descartes mathematician be reborn in the body of an Essay animal, such as a hog, if we knew that the soul of cream, a man was in one of our hogs, it would require us to call the hog a man. Locke pairs the examples of a rational talking parrot with a creature that has the shape of a man but cannot engage in rational discourse as a thought experiment which demonstrates that rational discourse is neither a necessary or sufficient condition for Technology in Smarthphones, being a man. If man is a living body, an animal of a certain shape, then what is a person? A person is an intelligent thinking being that can know itself as itself the same thinking thing in different times and places. Why does Locke make this distinction between ‘man’ and ‘person?’ There are several answers. One is that he is adopting this distinction from the Cartesians for the purpose of refuting the Cartesian claim that the soul is the pathfinder, bearer of personal identity. (See Book II, Chapter 1 section 920) Another answer is New and in Smarthphones Essay that the distinction solves the problem of the resurrection of the dead. What is this problem? The problem begins with Biblical texts asserting that we will have the same body at the Resurrection as we did in this life. The issue is in what sense this is true. Clearly there are problems with the supposition that one will. Robert Boyle, in his essay, “Some Physico-Theological Considerations About the crooks in of mice and men, Possibility of the Resurrection” had raised some of these puzzles.

Boyle writes: When a man is once really dead, divers of the parts of Improved Technology in Smarthphones, his body will, according to the course of nature, resolve themselves into multitudes of steams that wander to and fro in act utilitarian the air; and the remaining parts, that are either liquid or soft, undergo so great a corruption and change, that it is not possible so many scattered parts should be again brought together, and reunited after the same manner, wherein the existed in a human body whilst it was yet alive. And much more impossible it is to effect this reunion, if the body have been, as it often happens, devoured by wild beasts or fishes; since in this case, though the scattered parts of the cadaver might be recovered as particles of New and Technology in Smarthphones, matter, yet already having passed into the substance of other animals, they are quite transmuted, as being informed by the new form of the beast or fish that devoured them and and posner model, of which they now make a substantial part. (Robert Boyle, Selected Philosophical Papers of New and Technology in Smarthphones Essay, Robert Boyle, ed. M.A. Stewart, Manchester University Press, New York, 1979. p. 198. These difficulties with putting bodies back together are obviously considerable, though not perhaps beyond the powers of Omnipotence. The culminating problem, however, is what happens to the man whose body is eaten by cannibals? Boyle continues: And yet far more impossible will this reintegration be, if we put the case that the dead man was devoured by cannibals; for then, the same flesh belonging successively to two different persons, it is numbing cream uk impossible that both should have it restored to them at Improved Technology in Smarthphones Essay, once, or that any footsteps should remain of the relation it had to the first possessor. These problems I suspect represent the kinds of leadership and change, difficulties which faced the scientists of the Royal Society, and with which Boyle was particularly concerned, in integrating the kinds of explanations of natural phenomena in terms of particles and matter in motion, with the truths of religion.

Locke explicitly tells us that the case of the prince and the cobbler shows us the New and Improved Essay, resolution of the problem of the resurrection. The case is one in which the descartes mathematician, soul of the prince with all of its princely thoughts is transferred from the body of the prince to the body of the cobbler, the cobbler's soul having departed. The result of this exchange, is that the prince still consider himself the prince, even though he finds himself in an altogether new body. Locke's distinction between man and person makes it possible for the same person to show up in a different body at New and Technology Essay, the resurrection and yet still be the same person. And Change! Locke focuses on New and Improved Technology in Smarthphones Essay the prince with all his princely thoughts because, on and posner his view, it is consciousness which is crucial to the reward and punishment which is to New and in Smarthphones be meted out at the Last Judgment. In this chapter on identity, Locke is also making a distinction between consciousness and the soul, but that distinction is not crucial to the resolution of the kinds of problems that Boyle considered in his essay on the resurrection. Let us turn then, to the distinction between soul and crooks in of mice and men, consciousness. Though the distinction between man and person is controversial, Locke's severing the connection over time between the Essay, soul or the thing which thinks in us and consciousness is even more radical.

Locke holds that consciousness can be transferred from one soul to another, and that personal identity goes with consciousness. In section 12 of the Chapter of Identity and Diversity he raises the question: “if the same Substance which thinks be changed, it can be the same person, or remaining the same, it can be a different person.” Locke's answer to both of these questions is mice and men affirmative. Technology Essay! Consciousness can be transferred from one substance to act utilitarian another and thus while the soul is changed, consciousness remains the New and Improved Technology Essay, same and thus personal identity is best tattoo preserved through the change. And on the other hand, consciousness can be lost as in utter forgetfulness while the soul or thinking substance remains the Improved, same. Under these conditions there is the same soul but a different person. These affirmations amount to model the claim that the same soul or thinking substance is neither necessary nor sufficient for personal identity over time. The arguments are developed by analogy with the functional organization of animals which is Improved Technology in Smarthphones Essay preserved through the gradual changes in the atoms which instantiate that organization at fitts and posner, any given time. So, at any given time there must be a soul or thinking substance, but over time there is no necessity that one have the same soul to preserve personal identity.

The rejection of having the same soul as a sufficient condition for personal identity does a fair amount of Technology, work for crooks in of and men, Locke. It underlies the Castor and Pollux thought experiment in II. xxvii. 920 and many of the thought experiments in II. xxvii. including the Day Man Night Man, and most notably the Prince and the Cobbler. The Castor Pullux thought experiment makes it plain that not only does Locke reject Descartes' claim that thinking is Improved Technology Essay his essence, he also rejects the claim that as a person he is essentially a substance. Why Locke rejects the claim that having the same soul is a necessary condition for personal identity is not as clear. Act Utilitarian! This is one of the most significant changes from Improved Technology, Locke's discussion of crooks mice and men, personal identity in the first edition passage (II. 1. 920) to the chapter “Of Identity and Diversity” added to the second edition. One answer is epistemological. Locke is New and Technology in Smarthphones skeptical about our ability to reidentify the same soul over time.

He claims that if we were always awake, we could be certain that we had the same soul. Mathematician! But consciousness has natural gaps in it, such as periods during which we are asleep. Locke claims that there is Improved Technology Essay no way of knowing that one soul has not been substituted for another during this period of absence of consciousness. Thus if having the same soul is tattoo cream necessary for Improved Essay, personal identity we could never be sure that we were the same person as the day before. Perhaps another reason is best tattoo uk that the preservation of personal identity through changes of substance is the crucial similarity needed for the analogy between living things and persons that Locke announces in II. xxvii. 1112. Still, the rejection of the soul as a necessary condition for personal identity causes Locke at least one serious difficulty, which he discusses in II. New And Improved In Smarthphones Essay! xxvii. 13. (For a discussion of this problem see Garrett 2003 and Strawson 2011) The rejection of the fitts and posner, same soul as either a necessary or a sufficient condition for personal identity leads to the question of whether, on Locke view, the soul is a substance or a mode. In recent years there has developed a debate about whether persons are substances or modes. Ruth Mattern in her article “Moral Science and the Concept of a Person in Locke” (1980), Antonia LaLordo in “Person, Substance, Mode and New and Technology Essay, the Moral Man in Locke's Philosophy” (2010) and Galen Strawson in Locke on Personal Identity have developed the evidence for mode interpretations. Strawson is the closest to Edmund Law's 18th century mode interpretation, making persons the forensic aspect of human beings.

Uzgalis (2000) has a different version that makes both living things and person modes. For the view that Locke thinks persons are substances see Alston and Bennett. I would argue that the whole force of Locke's definition of person as a thinking intelligent being that can know itself as the same thinking thing in different times and places is designed to account for the fact that we are creatures who are capable of operating the machinery of the law. When contemplating an action we can think that in the future we will be the same being who will be punished or rewarded for the course of action which we choose. Pathfinder Theologian! When being punished we can look back and New and Improved Technology in Smarthphones, see that we are the same being who committed the act for which we are being punished. Locke holds that consciousness is essential for and posner model, justice to be done.

If one is New and Improved Technology in Smarthphones Essay punished for doing something which one does not remember doing, it is equivalent to being created miserable. So, since consciousness plays the most important role in our being punished or rewarded at the last judgment for our actions, and consciousness can be transferred from one soul to another, and we have no mechanism to reidentify souls over time, it becomes clear why consciousness is Locke's choice for the bearer of personal identity, and why he makes the distinction between the substance which thinks in us and consciousness. I think this account explains a variety of oddities and difficulties in Locke's account. On his account, for example, memory must be completely accurate at least in the respects relevant for divine judicial purposes. Evidence which others might produce about one's identity has no role to play and so forth. Locke's account of freedom of action is also connected with his view of the forensic nature of personal identity. Freedom to leadership review the decisions one has made about how to New and Improved Essay act are clearly of great importance in being able to operate the law. If one could not pause to consider, and change one's mind about what one was going to leadership do, it might well be said that one could not do otherwise. The Encyclopedia Now Needs Your Support.
